Mountie Recieves Music Honors
Andrew Lindell, Class of 2014, has been invited to participate in the Vermont All-State Music Festival as a member of the concert band. Andrew was selected through an auditioned process which determined him to be one of the top performing high school saxophonists in the state. The all-state festival will take place May 7-10th at Saint Johnsbury Academy. In addition to Andrew's selection for the Vermont All-State Festival, he was also selected to participate in the Green Mountain Music District V festival earlier this month.

Rallying for A Member of the MSJ Family
The MSJ community is rallying support for Nolan Alberty, age 2 and a half, who is battling leukemia. Nolan's mom, Mary (Crawford) Alberty graduated from MSJ in 2002. Her sisters Katharine in 2000 and Sarah in 1995. Visit this Facebook Page to learn more about Nolan's story. Please send prayers and positive thoughts, and if you can, there is an opportunity to link to a site to make a donation to help lessen the financial burden that comes with this journey to a cure. If you would like to contact Mary directly, please email her sister Sarah at sarah.crawford.stewart@gmail.com

MSJ Drama Program Presents "Moby Dick"
On Tuesday, March 25th, MSJ's storied drama program will present a comic version of Melville's "Moby Dick." The one act play entails a not very good wooden leg for Ahab (who tends to gets cramps), a 16 foot whale powered by 4 actors, rousing renditions of a well-known song by a merry band of sailors, quick scene changes, and a fight to the finish between Ahab and the whale. Ten actors and eight techies will bring the show to Springfield High school's regional festival on Saturday March 22, and will also bring the production to the Bagley Theatre at MSJ on Tuesday, March 25th. Check the MSJ website (www.msjvermont.org) for show times.  Nineteen MSJ one act plays over the past 27 years have been fortunate enough to advance to the state drama festival.  MSJ alumni have gone on to participate in both the film and television industries as actors, writers, and producers.  This year's production is once again being directed by Jennifer Bagley and Jessica Audette.

Mounties Thrive In Sports
Basketball- The women's basketball team completed a 21-3 season, making it all the way to the state championship!  The men's basketball team made it to the quarterfinals again this year.  These young teams have a bright future!
Cheerleading- The women's cheerleading team won second place in the state in their division.  They earned the right to go to the New England competition!
Indoor Track- Junior Kyle Diezel placed among the top finishers in the 300 and 55 meter dash at the State meet.  He played two sports during the winter season, as he was also was a key member of this year's basketball team.
Skiing- Sophomore Lucas Heald had an excellent ski season, including winning a downhill ski meet at Pico.  The state championships for skiing were in progress at the time of this newsletter.

Lent is a solemn, reflective season of the liturgical year that is the preparation for Easter. On Ash Wednesday, March 5, at our 10:00 am Mass we received ashes on our foreheads as a reminder that without God we are simply dust. The forty days of Lent recall the forty days Jesus spent in the desert before beginning his public ministry. During Lent we are called to renew ourselves through fasting, prayer and alms giving. Within the Lenten season MSJ students will have opportunities to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and participate in Stations of the Cross. Along with the Parish of St. Peter the entire school will participate in
filling backpacks for the Residents of Dismas House. These are personal item toiletries
such as toothpaste and shampoo etc. that are placed in backpacks and given to a resident when she/he arrives at Dismas House. The items will be collected through April 11.

ALUMNI AND FRIENDS

MSJ Loses a Devoted Alumna and Friend -Margie Canary 1935-2014

Margie Canary graduated from MSJ in 1952, after an early education by the Sisters of St. Joseph on Convent Avenue. In a sense, she never left Convent Avenue. After graduation she worked in a number of capacities at MSJ until her retirement a few years ago. In 2009 she was in the inaugural class of prestigious honorees in the initial Honor Our Past event. Margie is best remembered as the chief administrative assistant to principals for over 55 years. In that capacity she was usually the first to greet students and her kindness along with her no nonsense attitude resolved many "situations". She was passionate about her work and helped to expand programs at the Mount. Simply, she bled green and gave us a lifetime of passionate and competent service. She is missed much but will never be forgotten.

Beth Garbitelli ('08) is a reporter for the Associated Press in Montpelier. She is covering a range of subjects from crime to
energy policy to state legislation, and was recently a guest on the popular television program "Vermont This Week."  When asked about her career, she explained that, "[r]eporting is
a real passion of mine and I think it stems from my enjoyment from talking to people. Sharing people's thoughts and experiences brings stories to life.  Including that humanity in articles is always a goal for me when I write."  Ms. Garbitelli previously worked in public television in Virginia and in New York City.

Richard Cassidy ('71), Esq., was recently profiled in the Vermont Bar Journal, the official publication of the Vermont Bar Association.

Dave Kinsman, who coached MSJ to a men's basketball state championship in 1984, was named as a member of the Vermont Principals' Association Hall of Fame.

Clarendon Clerk Joyce Pedone ('65) recently retired with much acclaim after three decades of service to the town of Clarendon.
