STUDENT NEWS

 BASKETBALL THRIVES AT MSJ!

It is hard to believe the basketball season is just around the corner, but excitement is building on Convent Avenue!  More students will be wearing Mountie green for the upcoming season than have done so in years.  The 2013-14 Mountie basketball players are shown here gathered on the steps in front of the MSJ chapel.

WOMEN'S PREVIEW-  "I am very excited about the upcoming 2013-14 Girls Varsity basketball season here at MSJ," said Coach Dan Elliott.  The women's team returns with high expectations after a successful 2012-2013 regular season, which was followed up by an outstanding playoff run that included the Mounties first home win in a playoff game in several years.  Elliott explained that, "[t]he girls return five veteran varsity players from last year's playoff team and add eight freshmen who come to the Mount ready and able to contribute to the program."  Many of this year's basketball players were a large part of the tremendous success of this year's women's soccer team.

MEN'S PREVIEW- After the departure of a solid group of seniors from last year's squad, the MSJ basketball team will lean on the experience of this year's seniors: David Perry, Zack Lanzillo, and Colin Gilbert. Two of the three already have a state championship jacket, having seen significant time as a part of the 2012 state championship team.  Along with the three seniors, MSJ will look to a great group of underclassmen to help make the season successful.  Coach Jeff Cassarino said, "The 2013-14 MSJ basketball team will run an up-tempo offense that will be fun to watch and will play a  very aggressive defense that we hope will cause teams some problems. With only three seniors we are lacking varsity experience, but we have faith the younger players will step up to the challenge and help keep MSJ among the top teams in Division II.  Over-all the numbers in the program are strong and we will once again field a solid JV squad that will work hard to prepare themselves to carry the torch passed on to them by their upper-class teammates."
