Up to 1 in 5 Children Live with Serious Mental Health Conditions: CDC

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issues first comprehensive report on children's mental health in the United States.

Up to 20 percent of children in the United States have a mental disorder, and the number of kids diagnosed with one has been rising for more than a decade, according to a report released on Thursday by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

In the agency's first-ever study of mental disorders among children aged 3 to 17, researchers found childhood mental illnesses affect up to one in five kids and cost $247 billion per year in medical bills, special education and juvenile justice.

Governor's "May Revise" - No Good News, No Bad News

Brown issued his required mid-May budget proposal revisions Tuesday. There were no cuts to mental health but no restoration of any prior cuts, either. He does continue to support Medi-Cal expansion and, as recommended by most stakeholders, opts for it to be run by state.

Check out NAMI California's website for the California Department of Finance summary of the May Revise Budget.

And there's an Overview of the May Revision from the LAO.

Counties Still Not Prepared to Offer Expanded Mental Health Care

More than one million people in California live with mental illnesses - the largest number of any state. When the final phase of the new federal health care law starts in January of next year, more California residents than ever before will be able to seek help for problems ranging from depression, anxiety, and addiction to schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

But mental health providers in the state's Central Valley are unprepared for an influx of thousands of patients. State and county officials remain in the planning phases, even though new patients will be able to access these services in less than nine months.

MHSOAC Commission Meeting, May 23 in Sacramento

The agenda, supporting documents and PowerPoint slides for the upcoming MHSOAC Commission meeting, May 23rd in Sacramento, have been published here.

Upcoming MHSOAC Community Forum. An Advocacy Opportunity

The MHSOAC Community Forum will be held in Sonoma County on June 13 from 3:00pm to 6:30pm. The Commission wants to hear directly from all forum participants about what is working with the MHSA and the challenges that remain. The Commission needs to hear from NAMI members, the work we are doing, and the people we represent.

In addition to the agenda items the public is encouraged to make comments to the Commission. This is an important opportunity to address local issues that affect your community.

More information and agenda items will be posted here.

VA Mandates Overtime to Increase Production of Compensation Claims Decision
Latest Initiative Aimed at Reducing the Backlog
As part of its ongoing effort to accelerate the elimination of the disability compensation claims backlog, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is announcing today that it is mandating overtime for claims processors in its 56 regional benefits offices. This surge, which will be implemented through the end of fiscal year 2013, will be used to help eliminate the backlog with continued emphasis on high-priority claims for homeless Veterans and those claiming financial hardship, the terminally ill, former Prisoners of War, Medal of Honor recipients, and Veterans filing Fully Developed Claims.

Last month, VA announced an initiative to expedite compensation claims decisions for Veterans who have waited one year or longer. On April 19, VA began prioritizing claims decisions for Veterans who have been waiting the longest, by providing provisional decisions that allow eligible Veterans to begin collecting compensation benefits quickly.  With a provisional decision, a Veteran has a year to submit additional information to support a claim before the decision becomes final. More information can be found here.

Claims for Wounded Warriors separating from the military for medical reasons will continue to be handled separately and on a priority basis with the Department of Defense through the Integrated Disability Evaluation System (IDES). On average, Wounded Warriors separating through IDES currently receive VA compensation benefits in 2 months following their separation from service.

Veterans can learn more about disability benefits on the joint Department of Defense-VA web portal eBenefits at http://www.ebenefits.va.gov.

More information about filing Fully Developed Claims is available at: http://www.benefits.va.gov/transformation/fastclaims/.
