Sen. Steinberg Unveils Plan to Ease Overcrowding of People with Mental Illnesses in Prisons, Jails and Emergency Rooms
In a move to address issues raised from Newtown to Nevada, and soon to be considered by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, State Senate President pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg has unveiled a comprehensive proposal to help close the gaps in crisis mental health treatment and reduce overcrowding in California's prisons, jails and hospital emergency rooms.
The action would fund development of more crisis residential treatment beds, provide more mental health professionals for triage care, expand Mobile Crisis Support Teams for rapid response to situations involving individuals experiencing severe psychotic episodes, and would expand a successful program of mental health treatment for parolees which has shown dramatic reduction in recidivism.

Mental Health Awareness
National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day is today, Tuesday, May 7th. Sponsored by SAMHSA, the associated Congressional hearing is provided by a strong collaborative. NAMI, Mental Health America, Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law, National Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health, and American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry are delivering the House briefing on effective services and supports.
May 2013 is National Mental Health Awareness Month and here is the Presidential Proclamation to prove it!
Legislative Action PROPOSAL BY STEINBERG & SUBCOMMITTEE TO RESTORE MEDI-CAL ADULT DENTAL SERVICES was on the May 2nd Senate budget subcommittee agenda. The services were eliminated by the Legislature and Governor as part of the 2009-2010 State Budget. Medi-Cal dental services for children were not eliminated. The item was heard and held open until after Governor Brown submits his May Revise budget around May 15th. Legislature Passes First Set of Special Session Bills The Senate and Assembly voted to approve ABX1 2 (Pan, D-Sacramento) and SBX1 2 (Hernandez, D-West Covina) respectively, which would reform the individual and small employer health insurance markets and ban pre-existing conditions as a reason for insurance denial. The bills are headed to the Governor's desk; both are expected to be signed into law. Read the summary of the legislation.
Covered California
Covered California is working hard to launch the Affordable Care Act. For more information, attend a session in your region. As January 1, 2014 gets closer, more misinformation seems to be riding the printing presses and the airwaves so go hear the people who really know.
Covered California hosted a stakeholder webinar to present the Assisters Program Draft State Regulations on Friday, May 3, 2013. NAMI members and their affiliates could be Assisters. Check it out here.
