Stop Automatic Cuts to Mental Illness Research, Services and Housing
Congress faces another major deadline on the federal budget. Unless Congress acts by March 1, most federal programs will face a 5 percent across-the-board reduction, further slashing mental illness research, services and supportive housing programs.
This across-the-board cut, known as "sequestration," must be stopped. Unless Congress acts, the impact of these cuts will be immediate and far reaching.

MHSA Advocacy
Susan Inman posted this recommendation on NAMI CA's Facebook page: "Both Canada and the U.S. need better public education about psychotic disorders. I discuss this problem in my latest article, Let's Talk About Psychotic Disorders." Mental Health First Aid is great but it is not enough. California counties are encouraged to develop such early intervention programs as Susan describes with their MHSA funds. Susan has reminded us that this is a local level advocacy opportunity!

Legislation
The CA Senate and Assembly have begun hearing some of the special session bills related to implementing the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in California. Budget bills will follow. NAMI California is in a "watch" mode at this time since final action on these bills does not seem imminent. NAMI CAN! Liaisons, look for a conference call in the very near future!
