NAMI CAN!

Election Day: Other Things Happening

Tuesday

Call it CalDuals. Call it Dual Eligibles project. Whatever, the April, 2013 implementation date is getting closer but it is still confusing to the people it will affect. This national look at the demonstration project in a Kaiser Report is a good place to begin.

Wednesday

Job-based Health Insurance Declines Dramatically in California  The report, from the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, shows 55.6 percent of non-elderly Californians had job-based coverage in 2007. The jobs that are coming back, are now being offered without health insurance. The Medi-Cal and Healthy Families programs have picked up the slack.

Friday

Your Right to Timely Access to Mental Health Services, Mental Health Parity, Understanding Your Mental Health Insurance Coverage, Accessing County Mental Health Services, and how to Speak Up for Your Rights are new brochures all available on the California Coalition for Mental Health website.

Saturday

NAMI California works with several coalitions in pursuit of our mission. This is one. The California Coalition for Whole Health (CCWH) is a diverse group of behavioral health stakeholders concerned with informing California's implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) to appropriately address mental health and substance use disordertreatment needs. See this recent letter to the Health Benefit Exchange Board.

Sunday

Since the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), California has taken important steps to implement various provisions of the new legislation. Insure the Uninsured Project (ITUP) offers monthly newsletters aimed to keep policymakers, stakeholders and the media informed of California's progress in implementing federal health reform. Sign up to keep up.

Monday

OC Hotline Provides 24/7 Support

In celebration of Mental Illness Awareness Week (October 7-12) and World Mental Health Day (October 10), the Orange County Health Care Agency encouraged people to learn more about mental illness and the available resources in Orange County, by writing down two important phone numbers.

Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services. Hotline: 1-877-7CRISIS: One in four adults experiences a mental health problem in any given year. Orange County's mental health and crisis prevention hotline provides confidential phone assistance 24 hours a day/7 days a week to anyone seeking crisis or suicide prevention services. The hotline is operated by Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services.

NAMI OC Warmline: 1-877-910-WARM:  For non-crisis mental health support, the Warmline is available to callers struggling with mental health or substance use disorders. Callers speak with an understanding person who has been through a similar journey and is able to provide a friendly voice and information about mental health resources. The Warmline is operated by the National Alliance on Mental Health, Orange County Affiliate.

Since the inception of both lines in August 2010, there has been an overwhelming response. Over 11,700 calls have been made to the Hotline and nearly 65,000 people that live or work in Orange County have been reached through community events. The Warmline has processed over 18,000 calls-412% more calls than anticipated. In just one month, July 2012, the Warmline handled 998 calls.
