Friday:

NAMI California Urges Support of Proposition 30:

  • Protects funding of Mental Health services and substance abuse services and child welfare
  • Adds a section to the California Constitution so legislators cannot take money designated for mental health and substance abuse services to put in the State's General Fund.
  • Asks wealthy Californians to pay their fair share of taxes for schools and local public safety, including mental health and substance abuse services. Only couples making more than $500,000 per year would pay more income taxes, temporarily.
  • If Prop 30 fails, state spending on health and education will be cut severely. See NAMI California for details.

Friday:

NAMI California adds support for Proposition 34 - Death Penalty Repeal.

NAMI CA also adds support for Proposition 36 - Third Strike Reform.

See the position papers here.

Saturday:

Used the day to plan advocacy with the California Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatrists, United Advocates for Children, and Lets Erase the Stigma. More about this later!

Monday:

Study: Improving Quality and Lowering Costs Requires Partnerships Between Individuals and Care Providers.    Get involved with the physician community and let them know that you know this dynamic and, more importantly, can teach a thing or two about it.

Thanks to: Children's Mental Health Network and the National Institute for Health Care Reform.

The message of the week - a variety of work and advocacy is needed as always. Most pressing and most time-sensitive, tell your family, friends, and co-workers that NAMI California urges their YES votes on Propositions 30, 34, and 36!

If You Paid for Paxil, You Could Get a Payment from a Class Action Settlement

A class action settlement will provide money  to California residents who were 18 years old or
older and who paid for any portion of the price of  the prescription antidepressant Paxil while living
in California from January 14, 1999 through January 1, 2003, and who qualify under the settlement
(these people are called "Class Members"). If you're  included, you may ask for a payment, or you can
exclude yourself from, or object to, the settlement.

The Superior Court for the State of California, County of Los Angeles will have a hearing to decide whether to approve the settlement so that payments can be issued. The lawsuit claims that GlaxoSmithKline falsely advertised and promoted Paxil as being non-habit forming or non-addictive and that GlaxoSmithKline's advertisements and promotional materials failed to disclose the risk of symptoms from stopping or discontinuing Paxil. GlaxoSmithKline denies each of these allegations.
