'Signs of great health of our community'

Parish Minister
Rev. Mary Katherine Morn

Three things really impressed me about UUCF's Annual Meeting yesterday. Three signs of the great health of our community. Three things that will continue to serve UUCF through this time of transition.

First, sincere appreciation for our leaders. I hope you do not take for granted the way you appreciate and respect each other. From the recognition with special awards to the respectful way you treat your leaders, you have built a culture that encourages people to contribute and appreciates them when they step up to the task. This is evident in the 24 people who put themselves forward for the seven spots on the Parish Minister Search Team as well. Be sure to let your ministerial candidates know that you respect your leaders and know how to show your appreciation to each other. Ministers love that stuff!

Second, the honest way the leaders and others are responding to the financial challenges UUCF is facing right now. We had two great budget forums last week - more people showed up to ask questions and share concerns than I have ever seen at forums like this. There were numerous great observations shared and some good ideas emerged that will no doubt shape the way you move forward. Remember, it isn't that we have few resources - there is richness all around at UUCF. But, the ebb and flow of membership numbers and the current attention to Reach Campaign projects and the transition of staff have put a strain on the operating budget. I know you will find creative and healthy ways to move through this.

Finally, the third thing that points to health is your ease at laughing together. What we do in religious community is very important - and even serious. But if we take ourselves too seriously, and are unable to laugh together, why would we bother? I will take some of those fun moments from the meeting with me when I go as a reminder that no matter what is going on, laughing helps us keep perspective and savor the moment.

I feel so much confidence in your future. None of us can now fully imagine how things will look at UUCF in three years (or, actually, even three months!). But, my confident prediction is that you will keep doing great things with respect, honesty and humor. What more could we ask?

Yours,
Mary Katherine
Annual Meeting
AM2014 Annual Meeting a swift success

Incoming Board President Janet Cushing sings the praises of current president Don Reagan.
Board of Directors President Don Reagan presided over an unusually speedy 2014 Annual Meeting on Sun., Jun. 8. In addition to approving the 2014-15 congregational operating budget by a vote of 187-5, in less than an hour member elected new congregational leaders, voted for four new members of the Parish Minister Search Team (PMST) and recognized three special members for exemplary service.

Leadership elections

The Nominating Committee is pleased to announce the results from yesterday's leadership election. The contested votes for Nominating Committee were very close, requiring a couple of recounts to ensure accuracy. All those elected have agreed to accept significant new responsibilities on behalf of the congregation. Thank you for your generosity and your service. Here are the results:

Board of Directors

Jan Cooper (2014-2017)
Judy Gallimore (2014-2017)
Steve Myles (2014-2017)
Hanh Michael (2014-2016)
Linda Hunt (2014-2015)

Endowment Committee (2014-2017)

Nominating Committee (2014-2017)

PMST voting

From a slate of 24 candidates, the congregation submitted votes for four members of the seven-member Parish Minister Search Team. The Board of Directors will tabulate the votes and determine the four elected members of the committee at the Jun. 17 Board meeting. From the list of remaining candidates, the Board will also appoint three additional members of the PMST. Those results will be announced after the Jun. 17 meeting.

Congregational awards

The congregation honors three individuals each year with its top awards: the Founders Award, Bruce A. Birnbaum Volunteer Award and Howard and Agnes Sollenberger Community Action Award. (Click here to see photos of the awards recipients.)

The Founders Award is given to an individual who exemplifies long-term, outstanding service and dedication to our religious community in the spirit of our UUCF founders. This year's recipient, Furman Riley, received the award for his long and varied contributions of time, talent, leadership and determination to our music, building and social justice programs, just to name a few.

The Bruce A. Birnbaum Award, named for longtime member and volunteer extraordinaire Bruce Birnbaum, is given for volunteer service to UUCF above and beyond the call of duty. Barb Brehm, this year's winner, was honored for her long service as a congregational leader - including as former Board president - as well as her penchant for pitching in as a happy and capable volunteer where and whenever needed.

The Sollenberger Award, the congregation's top social justice award, was given this year to Hal Fuller in recognition of his distinguished leadership in social justice within UUCF for 37 years, and for his decades-long collaboration and work with groups outside of UUCF to educate and promote social justice issues.

Congratulations and bravo to Furman, Barb and Hal.
