Parish Minister Search Team  
Apply to serve by May 19

At the Jun. 8 Annual Meeting, the congregation will elect four members of the Parish Minister Search Team from a slate of candidates selected by the Board of Directors. The Board will later appoint three additional members to ensure the group is balanced and representative of the congregation at large. If you have the time and would like to be considered by the Board as a candidate, please complete an application by noon on Mon., May 19.

Applicants need to meet the following minimum criteria:  
  • You are a member (one who has signed the membership book) and make regular financial contributions to UUCF.
  • You must not be a current member of the Board, Coordinating Team, Lay Ministers Council or staff.
  • You must not be the spouse or partner of a current member of the Board, Coordinating Team, Lay Ministers Council or staff.
The Board looks forward to receiving your feedback and nominations for service on this important team.

Slate of candidates for election at Jun. 8 Annual Meeting

As per the UUCF bylaws, the Nominating Committee last week presented their candidates for the leadership positions to be elected at the Annual Meeting on Jun. 8, immediately following the 10 a.m. worship service. Click here to review the slate of candidates. If you would like to nominate additional candidates for any position, you may do so by written petition of 15 or more members, submitted to the Nominating Committee up to 21 days before the Annual Meeting (by May 18). Summer worship volunteer signup. It's time to sign up to volunteer at worship services during the summer! We need people to help with coffee, serve as ushers and staff the welcome table and the Fair Trade cart for the weeks we are on campus, and ushers and welcomers when we move to Oakton Elementary School. Look for the signup table in the Commons after services or email Mary Foster.
 
Pledging update. We still have 100 pledges outstanding; total pledged so far is $852,139. It will take precious staff and volunteer resources to track down pledges. Click here for a pledge form you can complete and submit online.

Wi$dom Path: Money, Spirit and Life. Adult Programs course. Thu., May 15, Sep. 11 and 25, Oct. 9 and 23, Nov. 13 and Dec. 11, 7:30-9 p.m., Rooms 3 & 4, Prog. Bldg. Led by Bonnie Wald and Janine Greenwood. Note: June meeting will be held Wed., Jun. 4, Room 5, Prog. Bldg. No classes in July or August. Saturday Polylogue. May 17, after the 4:30 p.m. worship service, in the far corner of the Sanctuary Commons. All are invited to continue the conversation after the service. Join Rev. Mary Katherine Morn for a 30-minute discussion on the topic of her sermon, Courage and Curiosity. Note: Polylogue is a dialogue among many participants, sharing of one's thoughts on a topic and respectful listening to others' perspectives. This polylogue is the last one of the congregational year.

Wellspring information meeting. Sat., May 17, after the 4:30 p.m. worship service, and Sun., May 18, after the 9:15 and 11:15 a.m. worship services, Room 1, Prog. Bldg. Meet with Linnea Nelson and others to learn about Wellspring, a yearlong exploration of UUism and spiritual beliefs that will begin in September with a Saturday retreat and continue on alternate Thursdays 10 a.m.-noon throughout the congregational year.

The Problem of Evil from a UU Perspective. Sunday Forum - Science, Reason & Religion. Sun., May 18, 12:30 p.m., Chapel. With Ministerial Intern Eve Stevens. We'll explore the work of modern philosophers who have tried to explain what evil is and how we might face it. Stevens will explain why she believes evil should be part of our theological discussion as UUs. Note: This forum is the last one of the spring semester.

Christian Connection Group. Sun., May 18, 7 p.m., Room 10, Prog. Bldg. What does it mean to be a Christian in the liberal religious tradition? Is it possible to work with Christian scripture, language and metaphor without necessarily affirming a creed? Contact John Monroe. Note: This meeting will be the last one of the congregational year.

Children & youth  

Sat. MS RE class in session May 17.
Class begins at 3:45 p.m. Note: This last class starts 30 minutes earlier than usual. You will go to the Sanctuary as a group for Teacher Appreciation at 4:30 p.m.

Sun. RE classes in session May 18. All ages and all teachers, greeters and workshop leaders begin in the Sanctuary for Teacher Appreciation before returning to the Program Building for the last day of regular RE.
 
May and June youth groups.
MS and HS youth groups will not meet at their regularly scheduled Sunday evening times during May and June because of youth activities scheduled at other times.


Register online now for RE classes this summer and/or next fall. Why now? We need to create attendance lists, allergy lists and let teachers know who will be in their classes. Teachers meet over the summer so it's helpful for them to have this information.

The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner's Semester at America's Holiest University - Humanists of UUCF. Mon., Jun. 2, 7:30 p.m., Chapel. Kevin Roose, a Brown University student, did his "study abroad" at Liberty University, a Christian college in Lynchburg, VA, to expose himself to beliefs different from his own. Roose wrote The Unlikely Disciple about his experiences. Read the book (or as much of it as you can) and join us to discuss the ethical dilemma created by Roose's attempts to hide his real beliefs while at Liberty and how we respond to those whose beliefs are different from our own. Spiritual ecology discussion - Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions. Wed., Jun. 18, 6:30-8 p.m., location TBD. Join us to discuss the short essays by Chief Oren Lyons, Listening to Natural Law, and by Chief Tamale Boya, Revelation at Laikipia, Kenya, both of which appear in the 2013 book, Spiritual Ecology: The Cry of the Earth. These essays articulate spiritual responses to the ecological crisis, from spiritual and environmental leaders with a range of perspectives. Seeking fluent speakers for phone survey. ESOL group needs a few hours of time from volunteers who are fluent in Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Amharic, Arabic, Urdu, Vietnamese, Thai, Farsi and any Bengali or Kurdish languages to help with a phone survey of adults who've expressed interest in our classes but currently speak little or no English. EarthCircles Rising. Weekly checklists of actions taken are easy to submit: use the interactive website, drop off your forms at the Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions table after services or email your completed actions list to Ed Butterworth. The latter two options enable you to add actions not on the checklist. Make a family submission with young children or help older children submit their own checklist. We gladly accept submissions from college students and young adults who attended UUCF as youth. The data gleaned from your participation helps us plan future actions and education programs at UUCF that are meaningful to you and your family.

 

Are you an accountant or bookkeeper? Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions seeks an individual to help keep our finances in order. We've received three grants and expect more to come. Contact Eric Goplerud.

 

Pastoral Care Associates Committee. Looking for congregation members to join the committee this fall. Help counsel and care for the spiritual needs of UUCF members and friends experiencing challenge and transition. Application process (with interview) and training session required. Reproductive Rights and Access discussion. Reproductive Justice Task Force. Sat., May 24, 6-9 p.m., Chapel. A presentation and discussion on the relationship between reproductive oppression and its social, political and economic impacts. RSVP by May 18 to Kandi Mitchell.  

 

ViVa Vienna - six more volunteers needed. Sun., May 25, and Mon., May 26. Do you like spreading the word about Unitarian Universalism? Are you proud of the things we do here, such as our work for reasonable gun laws, LGBTQ rights, ending homelessness and getting the word out about climate change actions? Can you spare some time to talk to the Vienna-Oakton community? Sign up here for a two-hour shift at our booth.
