The Age of Stupid, a mock documentary set in the devastated world of 2055. Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite stars as a man who looks back at old footage from our time and asks, "Why didn't we stop climate change when we had the chance?" Following the film, Mike Casey of Tigercomm, a leading US clean-tech PR firm, will speak on Present-Moment Activism.

It's time to collect $3,000 for UUCF's April commitment to deliver food vouchers to clients of Our Daily Bread. Please stop by the table in the Commons or send a check to the UUCF office with ODB written in the memo line. About 30 area families are counting on us. 

Gun violence prevention vigil. Fri., Mar. 14, 10 a.m., NRA headquarters, 11250 Waples Mill Rd., Fairfax. Coalition of gun violence prevention organizations gather to honor those killed by gun violence. Contact Bob Hatfield.

Saturday Polylogue. Mar. 15, after the 4:30 p.m. worship service, Sanctuary. All are invited to continue the conversation after the service. Join Rev. Mary Katherine Morn for a 30-minute discussion on the topic of her sermon, Creativity, Technology and Community. Note: Polylogue is a dialogue among many participants; sharing of one's thoughts on a topic and respectful listening to others' perspectives.

How and What We Eat. Sunday Forum - Science, Reason & Religion. Sun., Mar. 16, 12:30 p.m., Chapel. With Deborah Freeman and Grace Meininger. From the New York Times review of Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us (Mar. 15, 2013): "There is a certain enlightened segment of America that relishes a good gastro-scolding, ... But there is a much larger segment of America whose members heedlessly eat processed foods that make them overweight and unwell. Michael Moss, a dogged investigative reporter who neither scolds nor proselytizes, is here for them." Discussion includes how large food companies get us hooked on their products and how this affects us and some of the poorest members of society. Contact Bob Hatfield.

Basic first aid, CPR and automatic electronic defibrillation (AED) training. Sun., Mar. 16, 12:45-5 p.m. Lunch included. UUCF member Chris Kenny will teach us how to operate the new AED equipment in the Sanctuary Kitchen and the Prog. Bldg. lobby. Training is free and participants will be certified in basic first aid, CPR and AED equipment at its conclusion. Child care available if requested by 5 p.m., Thu., Mar. 13. Narratives and Counter-Narratives. Adult Programs course. Sun., Mar. 16 and Apr. 13, 1-2:30 p.m., Room 5, Prog. Bldg. With Eve Stevens. Participants seek to understand how stories we have been told shape our ideas and perceptions. We will try to hear the voices and stories in theology, history and literature that have been drowned out by the dominating perspective. As we listen for these counter-narratives, we will find new ways of telling our own stories and those of our UU community. Register at ap@uucf.org.

Fairfax UU Summer Experience (FUUSE) for teens. Applications due Apr. 6 Note: This deadline is one month earlier than it has been in the past. Learn details of FUUSE here. 

Sat. MS RE classes in session Mar. 15. OWL begins at 4:15 p.m. Children 5 and under attend Nursery in the Sanctuary Building on Saturdays. Books and drawing materials provided for older children during the service. HS has moved to Sundays at 9:15 and 11:15 a.m.

HS Movie with the Minister. Sat., Mar. 15, 5:30-9 p.m., Room 11, Prog. Bldg. Rev. Laura Horton-Ludwig joins us to watch Paper Clips, a documentary about a middle school class in Tennessee learning about the Holocaust by trying to collect 6 million paper clips. Bring $5 for pizza. Sun. RE classes in session Mar. 16. K-Grade 5 begin in the Chapel before going to class (9:15) and kindergarten or workshops (11:15). All other ages and grades begin in classrooms. Nursery care available in the Sanctuary Building.

13th Annual Youth and Teen Performing Arts Celebration. Sat., Mar. 29, 5:45-8:30 p.m., Sanctuary. Please join us for an evening of joyful expressions of artistic talent and a spaghetti dinner. This event has become a tradition at UUCF. Suggested donation: $10/adult, $5/youth. Proceeds benefit UUCF Performing Arts Scholarship Program. Calling all young performers. UU-United Nation's Office (UNO) Climate Change Task Force and Citizen's Climate Lobby at regional UU environmental meeting. Sat., Mar. 22, 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m., UU Church of Arlington, 4444 Arlington Blvd. Guest speakers are Dr. Jan Dash, Chair, UU-UNO Climate Change Task Force, and Lynn Dash, Group Leader, Central New Jersey, Citizen's Climate Lobby. Includes time for worship, greeting each other and furthering the work of our groups focusing on environmental justice, climate change, ethical eating, environmental restoration and spiritual resources for environmental work. Interfaith rally in support of family planning and religious freedom. Tue., Mar. 25, 8:30 a.m. Join UUs and others at the Supreme Court to show support for the provision of the Affordable Care Act that includes family planning as basic health care. Two cases being heard that day challenge this provision. Join members of UUCF's Reproductive Justice Task Force (RJTF) to speak up for women's rights to basic health care. For more info, click here. Exhibit features the work of George L. Smyth, Barry Schmetter, D.B. Stovall and Scott Davis, and includes color and black and white photographs. The Sound of Hope, a special worship service of music and readings presented by the Combined Choirs from DC-area UU congregations. Sat., Mar. 29, 3 p.m. All Souls Church Unitarian, Washington DC. Explore messages of justice, love and hope through dynamic music. The massed choir will present the world premiere of a newly commissioned choral work by renowned composer Jim Papoulis, as well as other works by Ysaye M. Barnwell, Tom Benjamin, Pepper Choplin, Clif Hardin and more. Admission is free. A free-will offering will be taken to support Jim Papoulis' Foundation for Small Voices. Parking is limited. Public transportation (Columbia Heights Metro station is two blocks away) and carpooling are strongly recommended. Reception to follow. 

 

The Underground Railroad dramatic narrative. Sun., Mar. 30, 1-3 p.m., River Road UUC, Bethesda. Historian Anthony Cohen traces the steps of runaways along wilderness trails and waterways to fugitive slave communities and Quaker sanctuaries. Light lunch and dessert reception included in ticket price. Proceeds benefit RRUUC's College Access Fund, funding college scholarships for minorities. Tickets: Adults are $30 ($15 is tax-deductible), Youth ages 13-18 are $15 ($5 is tax-deductible), Families (1-2 adults with children) are $60 ($20 is tax-deductible). Circle of Light: An Exploration in Spiritual Growth and Healing. Sat, Apr. 19, 12:30-2 p.m., UU Church, Reston. Enjoy guided imagery, meditation, drumming and singing as we celebrate the coming of spring. Please bring drums or other instruments. UU Fellowship of North Bay in Napa, CA, offers wine country excursions Apr. through Oct., giving visitors an inside look at this beautiful area, internationally known for fine wines, gourmet dining and spectacular vistas.
