March Vespers service
Fri., Mar. 7, 7:30 p.m., Chapel
 Humanists of UUCF will lead the March Vespers service on the theme Living With Purpose. The service will include diverse readings such as the children's book, Henry Works, by D.B. Johnson and poems and reflections by Maya Angelou, A.C. Grayling, Duane Elgin and Mary Oliver. Music will include flute and piano duets and a performance of Phil Ochs' When I'm Gone. If you need a little spirit boost, check out this video of our RE classes showing off their best hula moves. Science or Pseudoscience: The Sheldrake Controversy. Sunday Forum - Science, Reason & Religion. Sun., Mar. 9, 12:30 p.m., Chapel. With Albert Nekimken. We'll view Dr. Rupert Sheldrake's controversial TED Talk, The Science Delusion, in which he challenges the dominant materialist worldview of contemporary scientists and 10 "dogmas" associated with it. The video of his talk was removed from the main TED website and relegated to a less-accessible blog site. Forum participants will discuss where the line between science and pseudoscience is, whether Sheldrake was treated unfairly and whether the controversy damaged the overall credibility of TED talks. All of us have experienced a friend or family member being seriously ill. Facilitated discussion based on personal experiences, pastoral care training materials and various printed resources. Register at ap@uucf.org. Urban and Suburban Meadows: Bringing Meadowscaping to Big and Small Spaces. Adult Programs course. Sun., Mar. 9, 1-3 p.m., at the home of Kristin Moyer (near UUCF). View and discuss a 60-minute video illustrating the diversity of life inhabiting meadows and prairies. The video addresses the problem of extensive planting of non-native grass lawns across America and how we can make a difference. Meadow experts will walk us through meadow site preparation, design, planting and maintenance and the intricate connections between native plants and insects and the soil food web. Humanists of UUCF. RESCHEDULED - Mon., Mar. 10, 7:30-9 p.m., Sanctuary Commons. Mary Bellamy shares her experiences from Camp Quest Chesapeake, a local camp that is part of Camp Quest Inc., a network of co-ed residential summer camps based on humanist values for kids ages 8-17. She'll describe some typical camp activities and then the group will "re-enact" part of the camp experience, including singing songs and participating in a Socrates cafe.

Sat. MS RE classes in session Mar. 8. OWL begins at 4:15 p.m. Children ages 5 and under attend Nursery in the Sanctuary Building on Saturdays. Books and drawing materials will be provided for older children during services. HS has moved to Sundays at 9:15 and 11:15 a.m.

Narratives and Counter-Narratives. Adult Programs course. Sun., Mar. 16 and Apr. 13, 1-2:30 p.m., Room 5, Prog. Bldg. With Eve Stevens. Participants seek to understand how stories we have been told shape our ideas and perceptions. We will try to hear the voices and stories in theology, history and literature that have been drowned out by the dominating perspective. Fear and Trembling. Fri., Mar. 7, 8 p.m., UU Church in Reston. In this comedy, French director Alain Corneau delves into the painfully irrational world of office politics, further complicated by a severe case of culture clash. Film is in French and Japanese with English subtitles. Come at 7:30 p.m. to enjoy snacks and social time. Event is free but donations and snacks appreciated. Next film will be shown Fri., Apr. 4.
Women's journeys in midlife. Sat., Mar. 8, 7:30 p.m., Accotink UU Church in Burke. Over the years, many of us have heard a woman's life metaphorically divided into three stages: maiden, mother, crone. These days, women face new possibilities in their extended midlife period. They're not ready to retreat as "crone" but they are stepping into their self-assurance as "queen." We'll hold a ceremony of ritual and dance to mark this passage. Sign-up required by Mar. 6. The Underground Railroad dramatic narrative. Sun., Mar. 30, 1-3 p.m., River Road UUC in Bethesda. Historian Anthony Cohen traces the steps of runaways along wilderness trails and waterways to fugitive slave communities and Quaker sanctuaries. Light lunch and dessert reception included in ticket price. Proceeds benefit RRUUC's College Access Fund, funding college scholarships for minorities.
