Join Equality UUCF for this Sundance-selected film showing the dangerous repercussions of intolerance. The film follows evangelical leaders, politicians and missionaries in the U.S. and Uganda, as they attempt the radical task of eliminating the "sexual sin" of homosexuality and converting Ugandans to fundamentalist Christianity.

Nobel laureate Dr. John C. Mather, senior astrophysicist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, will present Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Understanding in the Age of Science as the Sunday Forum's first Ira Hamburg Memorial Lecture. As project scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope, Dr. Mather will describe the history of the universe, how the expanding universe led to life and where "we" are going. 

Dr. Mather, with George F. Smoot, won the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physics "for their discovery of the blackbody form and anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background radiation."

We need ideas for group social justice projects for the weekend of Jan. 18-20, 2014, in conjunction with Martin Luther King, Jr., National Day of Service. Travel Smart, Especially for Women.
Adult Programs course. Sun., Oct. 13, 1-2 p.m., Program Building. Led by Kristin Moyer. Email ap@uucf.org to register. What are the essential items you should pack in your suitcase? In your carry-on? What steps can you take to prepare for emergencies? Have you thought about traveling on your own, but had qualms? Kristin Moyer will answer these questions and more. With her late husband, Kristin traveled all over the world. After listening to Kristin, you will be ready to pack your bags! 

Live our commitment to the UUCF Gun Violence Prevention Congregational Resolution. Join our vigil this Monday at NRA headquarters. Oct. 14, 10-11 a.m., 11250 Waples Mill Rd., Fairfax. Vigils are held on the 14th of each month to commemorate the tragedy in Newtown, CT, last Dec. 14. Signs are provided. Parking on nearby side streets. Questions to Bob Hatfield or Jerry Poje.

The Wisdom of Pema Chödrön. Adult Programs course. Tuesdays, Oct. 15-Nov. 12, 7:30-9 p.m., Program Building. Led by Sarah Hover and Joy Hatfield. Email ap@uucf.org to register. Focuses on the teachings of American Buddhist nun, Pema Chödrön, resident teacher at Gampo Abbey, in Nova Scotia, the first Tibetan monastery in North America established for Westerners. Based on several of Ms. Chödrön's books, we will discuss her guide to compassionate living and practices to work through difficult life situations.

RE Classes. K-Grade 5 begin in the Program Building Chapel before going to class. All other ages/grades begin in classrooms. Coming of Age doesn't meet this week. PlaygroUUp - Free Play. Tue., Oct. 15, 10-11:30 a.m. Teen Center. This is a fellowship group of young children (ages 0-5) and parents/caregivers. Contact Meghan Crowley.    

HS Fall CON. Oct. 19-21. UU Church of the Shenandoah Valley. First step: Youth complete a UUCF Youth CON permission form. Adults who want to be advisors and/or drivers complete a Youth Con Advisor Volunteer form before registering with the Joseph Priestley District. We will send you the name of the UUCF advisor. You will need this name before signing up with JPD. Join James on his inaugural JPD CON.

Condolences to UUCF member Don Reagan and his wife, Ruth, on the death of Don's mother, Johnann Derrick, who died this week in Austin at the age of 82. A service and burial will be scheduled in El Paso, TX, where Don's mother was raised.

Classics of Unitarian and Universalist TheologyAdult Programs course. Suns., Oct. 20, Nov. 3, Nov. 24 & Dec. 8, 4-5:30 p.m. Drop-ins welcome; Registration appreciated; not required. Facilitated by Rev. Laura Horton-Ludwig. Do you ever wonder where Unitarian Universalism came from? Do you wish you were better at explaining UUism to other people? We'll trace the historical evolution of UUism in the U.S. by studying classic texts by UU theologians. Last year we focused on 19th-Century UUs. This year, we explore 20th- and 21st-Century theologians. Please come having read the assigned reading before the class.

  

Prophetic Unitarian Universalists of the 19th Century: Three Amazing Women. Adult Programs course. Sun., Oct. 20, 1-3 p.m., Program Building. Facilitated by Barb Brehm. Drop-ins welcome. Stirring the Nation's Heart, by Polly Peterson, contains stories of 18 prophetic 19th Century Unitarians or Universalists. This class covers three of the women who, while not well known, had a significant impact on our faith and our nation: Judith Sargent Murray, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper and Lucy Stone.  

 

God Revised. How Religion Must Evolve in a Scientific Age. Mon., Oct. 21, 7 p.m. UUCF Sanctuary. Hear renowned author and theologian Galen Guengerich, Senior Minister at All Souls Unitarian Church in New York City, offers his vision for a religion that does not rely on a belief in a supernatural deity to give meaning to our lives. Rev. Guengerich's presentation will be followed by a panel discussion by three religious scholars.

The Big Questions Game, Partner/Spouse Style. Adult Programs course. Sat., Oct. 26, 8-10 p.m., Program Building. Wine and light snacks provided. Facilitated by Bonnie Wald. Email ap@uucf.org to register. Within the tumult of everyday life, partners often do not get a chance to discuss life's big questions: Why are we here? What happens after we die? What do we want our most important legacy to be? We'll play a version of the Newlywed Game where we try to predict our partner/spouse's answers, talk with them and see if we predicted accurately. Then we'll discuss the questions in small group.

Taking Flight: Songs of Hope, with Sarah Jebian. Part of UUCF's Benefit Concert Series. Sat., Oct. 19, 7:30 p.m., Sanctuary. Tickets: $15 for one concert or $40 for the series. Award-winning singer and actress and UUCF member Sarah Jebian brings her beautiful voice and unique arrangements to this performance to benefit Standing on the Side of Love. Her goal is to raise at least $10,000 during the next calendar year.

Travelers will experience this culturally rich area, spend time with our partners in faith in the village of Szentgerice and visit Unitarian heritage sites. UUCF Deaf Project interest meeting. Sun., Oct. 27, 12:15 p.m., Music Room. Barrie Magee has been providing American Sign Language interpretation for deaf visitors for several months. This is an important service, but we have not yet reached out to the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. If you want to participate in increasing awareness about deaf culture and sign language within UUCF, please attend this meeting. Please let Raoul Drapeau know if you are coming. Mass incarceration is a civil rights issue of our time. 92% of prisoners are non-violent and languish in jails and prisons for drug or immigration offenses.
