"Faith Matters" blog - Trusting in a larger love

Trusting in a larger love
g
Parish Minister Rev.
Mary Katherine Morn

Some of you have heard from me and Laura about our hope to offer a concise and theologically grounded statement of our purpose at UUCF - both for us as individuals and for our community. To practice love in action and trust in a larger love.

These statements are designed to be specific and broad - hopefully articulating our purpose in an inclusive way. Practicing love in action takes many forms. Teaching, gardening, protecting the planet, advocating for economic justice, painting, raising a family, sponsoring a student, marching for freedom. Practicing love in action.

As I said in my sermon a few weeks ago, trusting in a larger love is perhaps a little harder to get our hands around. But, again, we hope this statement leaves room for our humanists, Christians, Buddhists and all those in between.

I recently discovered this beautiful short movie created by a Thai telecommunications company:

Giving is the best communication - True Move H commercial

It is the wonderful story of a generous man and his daughter and an unexpected gift. Though the generosity and the gift are connected in the story, that is not what was expected.

That's the thing about generosity - it's rarely a matter of direct cause and effect. I believe more in the spiritual well-being that results from generosity than in some reward that follows directly.

I hope you are moved as I was by this tender reminder of the power of love.

Yours,
Mary Katherine
