recipient for September is the Tenderfoot School of Nairobi, Kenya, a non-profit, non- sectarian school serving one of Nairobi's infamous shanty towns. The school prepares orphaned and disadvantaged children, grades K-8, for a better life through food, education and hope.

"Day to Serve" Food Drive. Sat., Sep. 21, 9-11 a.m. at UUCF or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, next door to UUCF. Need non-perishable items, like canned meats and fish, peanut butter, jelly, beans, cereal, pasta, 100% fruit juice, etc. You can make food or monetary donations. All contributions go to Food for Others. Questions to Ron Giusti.
Covenant Group Faciliator Training. Sat., Sep. 21, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Lunch provided. UUCF Covenant Groups are groups of 8-10 people, led by a trained facilitator, that explore issues and beliefs in a spiritual context. Through covenant groups, many UUCFers have made deep connections. Facilitator training explains the facilitator role and provides extensive opportunities for role-playing and coaching. All are welcome; you don't need to commit in advance to being a facilitator. "2000 Years of UU History: A Whirlwind Tour." Adult Programs course. Sun., Sep. 22, 1-3 p.m.; repeats Wed., Oct. 16, 7-9 p.m. Led by Rev. Laura Horton-Ludwig. Registration appreciated; not required. Where did UUism come from? How have we changed over the years, and what's stayed the same? We'll take a whirlwind tour through our history from its earliest origins to today, with time for your questions and a few tangents depending on the interests of the group.
"UUCF Leadership Circle." Adult Programs course. Sun., Sep. 22, 1-3 p.m., 1-2:30 p.m. (lunch provided); Wed., Nov. 13, 7-8:30 p.m.; Wed., Feb. 19, 7-8:30 p.m.; Sun., May 18, 1-2:30 p.m. (lunch provided). Led by Revs. Mary Katherine Morn and Laura Horton-Ludwig. Registration appreciated; not required. Join this quarterly gathering of current and future UUCF leaders. All UUCFers welcome, whether you've been a UUCF leader for decades or are just getting started. Worship, skill-building and mutual support and counsel on leadership challenges included. "Creating our Lives Consciously from our Deepest Inner Resources." Adult Programs course. Starts Mon., Sep. 23, 7:30-9 p.m., Program Building. Led by Zimri Putney, 703-517-7372. Join a supportive community in a practical spiritual journey, opening the path to the loving connections, peace, joy and success available from learning to hear and follow our intelligence, emotions, feelings and values. We will read and reflect on the teachings of Pema Chodron, Eckhart Tolle, David Richo, Tara Brach and others. Each meeting includes meditation, movement, reading and sharing.
Great Books Discussion Group. Mon., Sep. 23, 7:30-9 p.m., Program Building. Each month, the GBDG reads and discusses one of the "Great Books of the Western World." Participants are not expected to attend all sessions. This month's book is "The Wealth of Nations" by Adam Smith. Contact Randy Adams.
"World Religions and Spirituality: Exploring and Experiencing." Adult Programs course. Second and fourth Weds., starting Sep. 25, 7:30-9 p.m., Program Building. Facilitated by Jennifer Yi and Mark Magee. Register by email. Similar to UUCF's "Neighboring Faiths/Building Bridges" children's class, this year-long course explores various world religions - Eastern religions, judeo-christian-islamic faiths and atheism, humanism, paganism and our own UU faith - through readings from holy texts, guest speakers and/or visits to places of worship. Goal is greater appreciation, respect and understanding of the world religions and exploration of our own faith.
Forums on proposed Climate Change Congregational Resolution. Sun., Sep. 22 and 29, after Sunday services, Music Room. Share your thoughts and concerns about this proposed resolution on solutions for global climate change. The moral, spiritual and scientific background for the proposed Congregational Resolution will also be presented at the Science, Reason & Religion forum on Oct, 6, 12:45 p.m. Once input from the forums is incorporated, this resolution will be presented for a vote at a special UUCF Congregational Meeting, Sun., Nov. 3.

Children & youth
RE Classes. K-Grade 5 begin in the Chapel. All other ages/grades begin in classrooms. Sarah and Brian Jebian, our new RE Music Assistants, will teach our children a new song about our UU Principles.
We are closing the teacher gap! Sundays, 9:15 a.m., we need two teachers for Grade 2 and one for Grade 4. Workshop helpers for Sun. at 11:15 a.m. Chorale members can teach. We will work around your schedules. Remember, you do not need to be a current or even former parent to join a teaching team. Teachers of all generations make a stronger program!
MS OWL Parent Orientation. Thu., Sep. 19, 7:30-8:30 p.m., Room 9. All OWL families must sign a permission form, available from the instructors. If you aren't able to make this orientation, a second session is on Oct. 6, 5:30 p.m.
Gr. 1-5 Workshop leader interest. Interested in being a workshop leader on Sundays at 11:15 a.m. for Grades 1-5 for Oct. 6, 13, 20 and 27 plus one Saturday during the month? "Classics of Unitarian and Universalist Theology." Adult Programs course. Sundays, Sep. 29, Oct. 20, Nov. 3, Nov. 24 & Dec. 8, 4-5:30 p.m., and Mon., Oct. 7, 7-9 p.m. Drop-ins welcome; Registration appreciated; not required. Facilitated by Rev. Laura Horton-Ludwig. Do you ever wonder where Unitarian Universalism came from? Do you wish you were better at explaining UUism to other people? We'll trace the historical evolution of UUism in the U.S. by studying classic texts by UU theologians. Last year we focused on 19th-Century UUs. This year, we explore 20th- and 21st-Century theologians. Please come having read the assigned reading before the class. Start of the 2013-14 Vespers Season. Fri., Oct. 4, 7:30 p.m., Sanctuary. For our first Vespers, Susan Bennett presents "Instructions in Joy." Humanists of UUCF Meeting, "The Humanist Movement in Historical Context." Mon., Oct. 7, 7:30 p.m. Program Building. Rev. Laura Horton-Ludwig, as part of a series on "Classics of Unitarian Universalist Theology," will lead an examination of Humanist Manifestos I, II and III. She will also draw on "Our Humanist Legacy" by William F. Schultz, the American Humanist Association's Humanist of the Year for 2000, as well as essays about humanism.

"Scientific Implications of the James Webb Space Telescope." Sunday Forum - Science, Reason & Religion. Sun., Oct. 13, 12:30 p.m. Sanctuary. For information on all upcoming SR&R sessions, go to uucf.org/srr. Nobel Laureate Dr. John C. Mather presents on the development and large implications of the new science brought by the new James Webb Telescope. Dr. Mather is a senior astrophysicist in the Observational Cosmology Laboratory at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. He is also senior project scientist on the James Webb Telescope. This presentation is an Ira Hamburg Memorial Lecture.
