Announcements
for Jul. 25-Aug. 1

Don't miss out!
Join an RE teaching team

Some great teaching teams are looking for that one extra person to round out their team. Openings are available during all three services. If your children have been in RE for a while and you haven't taught recently, maybe it's time to sign up again. Remember, parents are expected to teach or volunteer in the RE program once every three years.

If you need a lower-commitment role right now, we have several options:
  • Workshop Leaders. Our new workshop format needs leaders throughout the year to work with Grades 2-5. Workshop leaders lead one workshop each Sunday at 11:15 a.m. for one month on a specific topic and once on a Saturday. We need three leaders in September.  Contact Director of Religious Exploration Linnea Nelson if you're interested in this role.
  • Workshop Facilitators. Facilitators assist workshop leaders. Simply sign up to teach Grades 2-5 at 11:15 a.m. and you will be assigned to the workshop as a facilitator. Training provided! Click here to sign up.
  • RE Greeter. What's better than greeting our children and parents as they come into the Program Building? We'll prepare you for the role. As the official snack provider, the kids will love you! Sign up here
If you have already volunteered to teach or greet - thank you! It's going to be a terrific year in RE!

ODB's FoodBRIDGE program
Join UUCF in helping families bridge the gap during hard times

Help reach UUCF's goal of $3,000 toward Our Daily Bread's FoodBRIDGE program.
Just like the rest of us, our neighbors who rely on ODB to help feed their families during hard times have food sensitivities or ethnic/religious food requirements. These requirements are tough to meet with ODB's traditional food delivery program. So, ODB is transitioning to the FoodBRIDGE grocery gift certificate program,  enabling families to select the foods that meet their needs.

You have already generously donated $1,800 toward the $3,000 goal. UUCF's ODB organizers still need about $1,200 by Aug. 18 to meet the needs of about 30 Fairfax County families. Visit the ODB table in the Commons to make a donation or mail a check to UUCF. Mark the memo section "ODB donation."

This week & weekend
All activities are open to all unless otherwise listed.

Join "Summer Heat." Rally for Independence From Fossil Fuels. Sat., Jul. 27, 9:30 a.m. Starts at St. Stephen's Church; ends at the White House. Join UUCF's Climate Action Group in this nationwide mobilization on climate change. Click here for more information.
New intern could use a few strong helpers. Our new Intern Minister, Eve Stevens, is moving into her new apartment next Wed., Jul. 31, and would be grateful for a few extra hands to help with the move. She will be living in Fairfax Corner off Monument Drive. Please let Rev. Laura know if you can help.

The wearing of the name tags. It is an act of hospitality, to both newcomers and long-time members, to wear your name tag when you come to services. If you need a new one, please email Carol Jensen, or leave your name at the Welcome Table for a replacement.

LOTS of ushers, welcomers, coffee service and Fair Trade volunteers needed for summer and fall services. Go to signupgenius.com and create a quick and easy username and password. Once you have signed up, click on "Find a signup," and search using Mary Foster's email address - mfoster@uucf.org. Thank you for your support!

Chairs! The new blue. Volunteers needed to transform our chairs. Have you seen our reupholstered chairs? Have you noticed the clean, refreshed wood? Did you see that there are a lot more to do? We need more volunteers for July and August or the project will slow down. Please volunteer to help on Saturdays (longer and bigger work sessions) or for one of the short work sessions during the week. Email Judy Gallimore or stop by the table in the Commons after services.

Toilet "flush" with cash! What started as a goal of $115 to provide clean water for one family in Africa, has grown to $1,035 for five families. That's thanks to the success of the "Tacky Traveling Toilet," a creation of the 4s&5s Summer RE class to raise awareness of global water issues. Donations go to The Water Project. You can pay to have this work of art placed anywhere this summer. Click here to donate and then let Suzanne Leonard know where you want the toilet delivered.

NAMI Family Support Meeting. Thu., Aug. 1, 7:30-9 p.m., Program Building. Support meeting for families with a loved one suffering from mental illness. Contact Joanna Walker.

Grow
The following programs and opportunities help us grow as individuals and as a community.

Multicultural Ministries Listening Project. The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) wants to hear from you! Through Oct. 31, 2013. Project wants to hear from people who identify as UU and have historically marginalized identities or experiences around ability, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, race and/or ethnicity. Must be 13 or older to take survey. UUA will host virtual listening circles this fall to explore big questions raised by survey results. All information kept confidential. Questions to Barb Brehm. Results shared during the UUA's "Thirty Days of Love" (Jan. 18-Feb. 16, 2014).

Opportunities to care for each other. Can you occasionally give rides, make meals, help with child care or offer comfort? Let the Caring Coordinators know how you'd like to help. They will keep your name on a list of caring volunteers and contact you when needs arise. Fill out this form to indicate your care-taking preferences. Thank you!

"Supporting Families: Working through Global Disasters with your Children." Adult Programs course. Sun., Sep. 29, 2-3:30 p.m., Chapel. Register at re@uucf.org. Elementary-age children welcome. Child care for younger children. Facilitated by Linnea Nelson, UUCF's DRE, and Dr. Sarah Hover, Licensed Clinical Psychologist. Events like the Newtown school shooting and the Oklahoma tornado that destroyed an elementary school affect our children deeply. Knowing how much information to share with our children and how to express our own sorrow can be difficult. This worship/workshop service designed by Rev. Debra Hafner from the Religious Institute, provides language and sacred practices to use when crises occur. Information contact Linnea Nelson.

Good times don't end with summer. Whether you choose to play, reflect, discuss or commune with nature, you will have a great time at the Fall Adult Retreat. For more information or to register, click here, or visit the Retreat table in the Commons after services.
