Tip of the Month
American Indian Head Start Programs Gain Screening Skills to Share

On March 23rd - 24th, members of NCHAM's Early Childhood Hearing Outreach (ECHO) Initiative staff were hosted by the Davis Head Start/Early Head Start program in UT to provide hearing screening training to American Indian Head Start programs representing the:

  • Cherokee Nation Head Start program, OK
  • Choctaw Head Start program, OK
  • Pueblo of Isleta Head Start program, NM
  • Winnebago Head Start program, NE
  • Navajo Nation Head Start program, AZ

Also in attendance were representatives from the:

  • Los Angeles County Office of Education Head Start program and the San Francisco Department of Public Health, CA
  • Office of Head Start (Janet Schultz and Robin Brocato)

As you can see, in addition to the serious work of gaining Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) hearing screening and follow-up skills, there was also time for a bit of laughter on the playground! Participants were enthusiastic about retuning to their respective programs to share their knowledge with colleagues for the benefit of the children they serve.

The ECHO Initiative is also pleased to be the recipient of continued funding through an intra-agency agreement between the Office of Head Start and the Maternal and Child Health Bureau to expand evidence-based hearing screening practices for children birth to five years of age served by Early Head Start / Head Start programs.  So watch for more training opportunities to come!
