NPR News Global Series: 15 Girls

Girls in the developing world have more opportunities than ever before. There's a better chance they'll survive childhood diseases, a better chance they'll go to school, and a better chance that they can marry later -- but in many places it's still not easy for girls to choose their own future.

In this series that began Oct. 5, NPR explores the lives of 15 girls and one boy who are challenging tradition, with reports on Morning Edition, All Things Considered and Weekend Edition through the rest of the month. NPR would like your perspective: What was the hardest thing about being 15? Listen for a compilation of listeners' responses later in the month.

Fall Fundraiser: #MyKGOU, Uninterrupted?
Don't interrupt Diane. Give now.
During last spring's fund drive, KGOU limited disruptive fundraising to just 17 hours. We're trying the same approach this fall, hoping to meet our $200,000 goal even sooner.

Can we eliminate the need to interrupt programs and raise all the money before Oct. 18? That remains to be seen. So far, we have just over $81,000 pledged or paid. Contribute what you can now.

We have a few incentives: all donors this fall will receive a $5 voucher from Half Price Books, valid at any of their Oklahoma City stores. Donors will also be entered in our drawings for $100 gift cards from Half Price Books, or tickets to Diana Krall's upcoming concert! No donation required to win -- see our complete contest rules and use our alternate entry form if you're not donating right now.

In the final days of the drive, we'll need some phone volunteers in the studio to help us take pledges. You can see the suggested shifts and sign up here.

This season, host Christian McBride travels to Panama City, New Orleans, Seattle, Dallas, Chicago, plus his own hometown of Philadelphia, talking to jazz musicians wherever they're playing across the country. Here's a video preview of what's to come.
How To Make Your Own Shrub For Sodas And Cocktails

Vinegar and fruit syrups known as shrubs can be made at home and mixed with seltzer for a refreshing homemade soda or, with the addition of alcohol, an out-of-the box cocktail. Here & Now resident chef Kathy Gunst has been making her own shrubs with various fruits and vinegars and brings four recipes to try yourself.

The Splendid Table's Sally Swift has another take on homemade sodas, with her Ginger Bug recipe. Stories and segments from The Splendid Table are a new feature on KGOU.org.
