News Series: Prisoners of Debt
Oklahoma Watch and KGOU logos Thousands of Oklahomans convicted of non-violent crimes face a mountain of debt upon their release from prison. They've accrued hundreds or thousands of dollars in fines and fees they are required to pay after their sentence has been served. Some attorneys and lawmakers say the debt makes becoming a productive member of society a much steeper climb; others say it's justifiable to fund the criminal justice system this way. KGOU and Oklahoma Watch are jointly reporting on this topic in a series that began this week. Read or listen to the reports in the archives and look for additional reports over the next few weeks.
