As-Salaamun Alaikum,

  بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

Imam Ridha (as)

One of the moving and practical lessons which our Imam left us with has been quoted by Mu'ammar ibne Khallad in which he narrates, "Anytime Imam Ridha (AS) would be given food, he would ensure that a large plate was beside him. He would then proceed to take the best food from each serving of food, put it on the large plate and then ask that this be distribute to the poor people. At this point, the Imam would read the verse of the Qur'an which states, "But he would not attempt the uphill road... (90:11)" [The rest of this sentence of the Qur'an states: "And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? (It is) the setting free of a slave, Or the giving of food in a day of hunger, To an orphan, having relationship, Or to the poor man lying in the dust. Then he (who does this) is of those who believe and is one who charges others to show patience, and charges others to show compassion. These are the people of the right hand. And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. On them is fire closed over." (90:13-20)]
The Imam would then say, "Allah rightfully knows that not every person has the ability to free a slave, thus, He ordered that another path to Paradise be opened - meaning that in lieu of the freeing of a slave, He ordained the feeding of a needy person through which each and every single person would have the opportunity to make it to Paradise and be admitted into Paradise."
