West Nile Virus: The 4 D's

The most effective way to avoid contracting West Nile Virus is self protection. It is simple and inexpensive just follow the four D's:

  • DUSK/DAWN-Limit outdoor exposure at dusk and dawn; stay indoors during evening to early morning hours -from about 7:00pm to 6:00am. This is when mosquitos are most active.
  • DRESS-Dress in light-colored clothing with long sleeves and pants;
  • DUMP AND DEFEND-Get rid Of any water outside that has been standing for more than 3 days, including changing water in stagnant swimming pools, birdbaths, pots and planters, gutters, pet dishes etc... Defend against unwanted pests by keeping doors closed and repair damaged screens.
  • DETERRENT-Use insect repellents that contain DEET or other proven deterrents. Check that repellants are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to provide protection for the amount of time you will be outdoors. Place deterrent on your outer clothing and exposed skin (never skin under clothing). Always read and follow directions on the bottle.
