City Encourages Residents to Conserve Water this Summer
With the arrival of summer weather, we want to remind our water customers of the following city regulations on the use of outdoor irrigation systems.
1. Irrigation of landscaped areas with an automated irrigation system must be limited to between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m.
2. Any irrigation or watering of landscaped areas that causes a substantial amount of water to fall or overflow on to impervious surfaces (such as sidewalks, streets, storm sewers, and driveways) is prohibited.
3. All lawn and landscape irrigation systems must be properly maintained (i.e. repair broken sprinkler heads or pipes) to prevent the waste of water.
The North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) recently announced that all of its water customer cities will be required to implement Stage 3 water conservation measures effective June 1, 2013. With this move, NTMWD residential and business water customers will be allowed to use automatic sprinkler and irrigation systems just once per week, if needed.
The City of Anna is not yet using water from the NTMWD, however, due to the continuing growth of our community, it will likely become necessary to begin blending NTMWD treated surface water with the existing ground water this summer. When that happens, the City of Anna will be required to observe the same NTMWD water conservation measures.
In order to maximize the useful capacity of our existing groundwater resources and delay the need to start using NTMWD water, the City of Anna is encouraging all our water customers to conserve water whenever possible. Please consider the following voluntary measures to reduce total water consumption.
1. Consider limiting the use of outdoor irrigation systems to twice per week.
2. In the absence of a drip irrigation system, use a hand-held hose with a shut-off nozzle, or a faucet filled bucket or watering can to irrigate other landscaped areas such as gardens or planting beds.
3. Use a water hose with a shut-off nozzle to wash vehicles.
4. Find ways to reduce your household water use. Here are a few simple suggestions:
* Sweep your driveway instead of spraying it off - Save 150 gallons a day
* Cut your 15-minute shower by half - Save 18 gallons a day
* Turn off your faucet while brushing - Save 6 gallons a day
