Volunteers Needed for Boards and Commissions

 

The Anna City Council is asking citizens to become actively involved in city government by serving on a City Board or Commission. We are currently looking for volunteers to fill vacancies on the Parks Advisory Board, Board of Adjustment, and Board of Directors for the Community and Economic Development Corporations. A brief description of each board is provided below.

 

Applicants must: 1) Reside within the Anna city limits; 2) Be willing to attend the regular scheduled meetings of the Board or Commission; and 3) Complete an official Board and Commission Candidate Application form available on the city's website and return it along with a current resume (if available) to:

Anna Community Development Corporation (one open position)

Members of the Anna Community Development Corporation (CDC) identify and fund community facilities and related projects that maintain and enhance the quality of life in Anna. The corporation has recently helped fund the construction of Slayter Creek Park Phase II. They also work in cooperation with the Economic Development Corporation, to coordinate efforts that expand the city's business tax base and promote job growth within the community. The Membership consists of seven volunteers who serve for two-year staggered terms. Meetings normally occur on the first Thursday of each month at 5:00 p.m.

 

Anna Economic Development Corporation (one open position)

The Anna Economic Development Corporation (EDC) works in cooperation with the Community Development Corporation to coordinate efforts that expand the city's business tax base with a focus on creating primary jobs within the City of Anna. The corporation provided incentives that resulted in the much of the retail development that has occurred in Anna since 2008. The EDC was instrumental in recruiting Brookshires Grocery Company and Images Vision Labs a growing software engineering company whose headquarters is now Anna. Membership consists of seven volunteers who serve for two-year staggered terms. Meetings normally occur on the first Thursday of each month following the Community Development Corporation meeting at 5:00 p.m.

 

Planning and Zoning Commission

The Planning and Zoning Commission is responsible for reviewing all new commercial and residential developments that locate within the City. They review and make recommendations to the City Council on subdivision plats, site plans, Zoning Ordinance amendments, Comprehensive Plan amendments, specific use permits and rezoning requests. The Commission recommended approval of a new Comprehensive Plan which the City Council adopted in April 2010. Membership consists of seven volunteers who serve for two-year staggered terms. Meetings normally occur on the first Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m.

 

Board of Adjustment (one regular and two alternate positions open)

The Board of Adjustment in a quasi-judicial board that serves as an appeal body for individuals seeking variances to the Zoning Ordinance and sign regulations; and to persons who wish to appeal a decision made by an administrative official enforcing the Zoning Ordinance. Membership consists of five regular members and two alternates who serve for two-year staggered terms. The board schedules meetings as needed.

 

Parks Advisory Board (one open position)

The Parks Advisory Board advises the City Council on park-related matters. The Board assists in the development of the parks master plan and reviews and recommends approval of the concept plan for new parks. Members assist in raising funds for the construction of new park facilities including the development of grant applications, and makes recommendations related to the development of new park and recreation programs. The Board was responsible for the creation of the city's new adult co-ed softball league. Membership consists of five volunteers who serve for two-year staggered terms. Meetings normally occur on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m.

Election Season

  

The May 11, 2013 Election will be for City Council Member, Places 2, 4, and 6. Candidate Packets to run in the May election will be available at City Hall starting January 21, 2013. The deadline to file applications for a place on the ballot is March 1, 2013.
