Buy-Sell Agreements

A buy-sell agreement is a contractual obligation between the shareholders of a corporation, partners of a partnership, and can even be between a sole proprietorship and a key employee. The purpose of a buy-sell agreement is to specifically outline the disposition of an ownership interest upon the death of one of the shareholders, but it can also include disposition of ownership due to disability, or retirement.

There are two basic types of buy-sell agreements that a company can choose to implement in their business. They can use a cross purchase agreement or a stock redemption agreement. Each agreement carries its own advantages and disadvantages. Both types of agreements should be considered in order to determine which would best suit the company's needs as well as the needs of the individual shareholders. Continue reading.

Net Price Calculator

Net Price is the amount that a student pays to attend an institution in a single academic year AFTER subtracting scholarships and grants the student receives. Scholarships and grants are forms of financial aid that a student does not have to pay back.

Net price calculators are available on a college's or university's website and allow prospective students to enter information about themselves to find out what students like them paid to attend the institution in the previous year, after taking grants and scholarship aid into account.

To find out how much college will cost, click here to launch the net price calculator and enter the name of the college to find it's net price calculator.

Estate Planning Terms You Should Know

Below are brief explanations of a few basic estate planning concepts and terms that may help you feel a bit less reluctant to begin or review this important aspect of financial planning. Please contact a partner if you have questions or would like to discuss your estate planning in greater detail.

Probate estate. The court process that ensures that the portion of an estate passed by a will is properly settled. Advanced estate planning can reduce the amount of an estate that must pass through probate (subject to potential challenges by heirs), thus saving time and fees.

Power of attorney. This gives another person, such as your spouse or a child, the legal power to act financially on your behalf should you become incapacitated. This can be as restrictive (bill paying only, for example) or as comprehensive (able to sell property, file tax return) as you wish to make it.

Mayer CPAs NYC Office Reception

After moving in December to a more spacious office, (and after a very busy tax season!), the Firm welcomed guests to visit the new office space. Thank you to everyone who was able to stop by! If you have not had a chance to visit, please do not hesitate to stop by when you have a chance.
