We Could've Been Anything (and we were fantastic together)

Dear Families,

Our musical, Bugsy Malone, ran for three shows this past weekend at Bellarmine's
McAstocker Theatre. Having listened to the music for months-the music room is right below my office-I was ready to put faces to the voices and storyline to the music. I had caught a few rehearsals on my way home from work, and had seen boys trying to keep their feet moving to the rhythm and girls trying to "get into their character," oftentimes a male role. Elementary and Middle School theatre isn't easy work, and I hoped Director Maria Lewis would have them ready. I was not disappointed.

Nearly 35 kids participated in the musical, from actors to set crew, make-up, lighting, and production. The hours they dedicated can make select soccer commitments seem doable. Tech week, costuming, dress rehearsals: all add-up for kids who are students first. And it adds up for the adults too. I know Michele Graves was not sure, as late as Thursday, that every girl would have a flapper dress. (The conference room outside my office became the fitting room for the last week of production.) I hoped they would be ready. They were.

I had the pleasure of watching Friday night's show. The house was more than three-quarters full. Bouquets of flowers were in the ready. Grandparents and older siblings had flown in, poised to see their "special one" in the lead role or as "#4 bush in scene five." There were opening night jitters, lighting and sound issues, but as Maria said, "It's live theatre." Parents beamed and camera flashes erupted, as the entire cast and crew sang their last song together. The kids were fantastic.

There are so many ways that our kids shine, whether in the classroom, on the altar, in the gym or field, at the farm, or on Tacoma Ave. for Keep 'Em Warm and Fed. This weekend they shone on a high school campus in the theatre. They could have been anywhere, doing anything, but they decided to work together in co-creating Bugsy Malone. I was grateful to be a witness of their joy and accomplishment.

From one of their songs:
We could've been anything that we wanted to be.
Yes, that decision is ours.
It's been decided. We're weaker divided.
Let friendship double our powers.

peace,
Chris

P.S.: Take a moment this Memorial Day to remember as a family those who have given their lives in service to our country.
