Save the World, Save the World
Earth Week was a fun week. We had L'Arche community members join us for two days as we planted flowers and vegetables in our little garden area. Pat Toohey talked to each class about water conservation, recycling, composting, and the amount of food waste we create at school. Pat is helping us design a more sustainable garden for crops that may be a source of food to the Food Connection but most importantly, Pat helps us remember the sacredness of the earth and the simple ways we care for it within community.
Fr. Gerry Chapdelaine SJ presided over our Thursday mass for the Middle School. Fr. Gerry preached about the types of soils that God's word falls upon. In a quiet church, he asked our oldest students if they were grateful for the abundance of God's gifts to us especially how God gives us life through creation. He ended by encouraging us all to thank God for our world.
Over 100 of us met at the Parish parking lot on Friday morning under the leadership of 8th grader Liberty E. Culminating our Earth Week activities, Liberty asked if we would walk or ride to school that morning. Acknowledging our impact on the environment, we gathered to walk to school together. There were moms with strollers and dogs, kindergartners with plant a tree stickers on their shirts, 8th graders who had ridden their bikes, teachers, Intermediate school friends dressed in grass skirts (it was also Hawaiian free dress) all ready to walk together.
Liberty grabbed the megaphone and shouted, "Save the earth, save the earth!" The group joined her in unison and off we went. A few cars honked in support as we crossed I St. but I imagine more than a few were confused as we walked down the few blocks in Hawaiian outfits and looking like we were having way too much fun.
From our Monday morning prayer citing Pope Francis's encyclical Laudoto Si to each class cleaning around our campus or church grounds, our Earth Week was graced filled; in my mind, a saving grace.
peace,
Chris
