The Stones Will Cry Out

I was in Seattle for Palm Sunday night Mass and I felt something on the way out that seems silly to say but Palm Sunday is the perfect way to end Lent.  I would love to rush to Easter joy, to get to the open tomb, to forget the Sacrificial Lamb and to get to the Resurrection but Palm Sunday doesn't let you do that.  Instead of thinking that my 40 days were almost over, the music of Palm Sunday forced me to see Jesus in all of his humanity and the Gospel stories of betrayal and Jesus in agony reminded me of my own human sin.  Hearing the Gospel being read about the crowd shouting "crucify him" had me remembering the song sung on Good Friday: Were you there when they crucified my Lord?.

Palm Sunday is the only Sunday when two Gospels are read.  Yesterday, we heard from Luke's account which is particularly detailed.  Palm Sunday packs a punch because in the course of one Mass we get two very different Gospel visions of Jesus.  In his first, Luke describes Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a colt as people spread their cloaks on the ground in front of him so the dust doesn't unsettle. Jesus arrives as the Son of Man with the multitudes praising God because of the wonderful things they have witnessed Jesus do.  He is their Savior, the King whom they have longed for to bring justice to their world.  Luke writes that Jesus rides as the crowd acclaimed, "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord."   This is the Jesus the early Jews expected and the narration of Jesus that Christians are most comfortable with today.

The second vision of Jesus is the one we sometimes would rather not see because this is the broken Jesus.  This is the Palm Sunday Jesus who suffers and is nailed to a cross. This is not what we really want to dwell on after a long Lent.  Palm Sunday rocks us into remembering that believing in Jesus means that it is especially through his death that Jesus shows us how to live.  When we allow ourselves to be with Jesus in his final days on earth, we see Jesus is healing those who have come to arrest him; loving those of us who deny knowing him ; forgiving those who persecuted him asking God the Father, "forgive them for they know not what they do."  The Palm Sunday Jesus never stops loving us, with his last breath he shows us how to die even when we may feel abandoned, "Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit."

I may be ready for Easter but I am glad to try to rest with the suffering Jesus who is my God and savior.  I pray that you will guide your children into this holiest of weeks as we move closer to the glory of the cross.  Find a way to get to Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord's Supper.  Join us for stations of the cross on Good Friday.  Whether Holy Saturday or Easter Sunday, I pray that you are together with your loved ones so that your hearts are filled with the joy of our Risen Lord and if you tried to restrain that joy, " the stones will cry out."

Blessings on all of your Easter tables.

peace,

Chris

Fish Fry

The Fish Fry was a fun event last Friday, supporting the Dominican Sisters of Tacoma.

The fundraiser is essential to our support of the Dominican Sisters, taking the place of our traditional ask for donations at the REACH auction.

Volleyball
Our teams are half way through their seasons!  They are improving every week and enjoying their seasons!  Here are the summaries of the games last weekend:

The 6th grade team won their match against St. Charles on Saturday!  The team's serving was unstoppable.  Go Shamrocks! For recent photos of the 6th grade team, click here.

This past Saturday the 7th grade volleyball team had a challenging match again St. Charles. They played tough, had some great rallies, but the team came up short losing all 3 games. They will regroup and prepare for their next match. April 9th, against All Saints.

There will be no games for the next two weekends due to Easter and Spring Break!  We hope everyone has a great and wonderful Holy Easter!

Track and Field
If anyone is interested in participating with All Saints, Holy Rosary and St. Vincent's, please contact our athletic director at cyoathletics@saintpats.org.

Short Film Premiere

Some of our students participated as extras in a short film shot in Tacoma last spring. The film will be shown on March 26 at 1:00 PM at the Blue Mouse Theater, followed by a a question and answer session. This event is free for school families to attend.

For more information about the film, click here.

Shout Outs

Shout Outs Wanted!  The school likes to recognize a few students or groups each Monday morning who have accomplished something noteworthy in their extracurricular activities.  This could be an award or accomplishment they have recently received through their individual or team sport, hobby, musical endeavors, arts, scouts, church, or any other activity.

Whatever it is, we would love to recognize them through a short "shout out" in the Monday morning announcements over the intercom.

Our students do so many amazing things outside of school, and we would like to highlight some of them as a way to show our support and pride in our students; but, we can't recognize them if we don't know about their accomplishments. To have your student recognized on Monday morning, please send an email to Katrina Coovert at kcoovert@saintpats.org by Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m.

Top Soccer

We are proud of our students, both past and current who give their time and energy to the Top Soccer program.

Last weekend was the final day of the program for this year. Stevie (8th grade) and Regan (7th grade) represented St. Pat's.

For an album of Top Soccer photos from this season, click here.

Students of Interest

Thumbs up! Our Cofia Club had a great experience at the Gates Foundation Teen Action Fair in Seattle on Saturday! Their enthusiasm and knowledge really made an impression with event organizers and visitors.

Our students realized they have an important voice to share with the world. They poured their hearts out advocating for children who need to be heard, but are unable to because of the barriers created by extreme poverty.

All the students in the photo to the right are either current Saint Pat students or Saint Pat's Grads. Left to Right:  Sofia Thomas (BPS Junior), Torie S. (SPCS 7th grader), Claire W. (SPCS 7th grader), Bryce Hustead (BPS Junior), Emily Gallagher (BPS Junior)

Grounds Work

Dedicated volunteers worked hard on March 12, 2016 to clean up the campus of Saint Patrick Catholic School in time for Grandparents Day!

The weather cooperated and the motivated crew pressure washed, weeded and turned over beauty bark on the school grounds. Chris Gavin, Principal of Saint Patrick Catholic School said, "the volunteers were terrific....The place looks really good!"

Let's Do it Again!
But, the weeds don't stop growing- especially in the wet spring weather! A weed whacking work party is happening again at Saint Patrick Catholic School 9 - 1 P.M. on April 9, 2016- the weekend before the REACH Auction.  Rob Silva, organizer of the campus clean-ups noted that the committee is, "hoping to do the same kind of campus cleanup so the school is bright and shiny for the REACH auction event."

We need volunteers to wash, dry, and iron chair covers for REACH!
