Spring training baseball is big business. Trips to the desert to see your favorite team and to get out of the winter weather have become more popular than summer vacations. For many fans, spring trips are the only major league baseball game they will attend, even when they have teams in their own cities. Why? Spring training games remind us that being big business is not the same as acting like it's all business. Spring training is uniquely fun.
I was thinking about the similarities between spring ball and schools. There are some qualities about Spring training that I think we should do more of in school. Here are my 5: instruction; everyone participates; trying new things; being a kid; and stretching and sunscreen. Spring baseball is about instruction and practice. Coaches seem to mingle alongside players, encouraging, coaxing, suggesting. The focus is on improvement and active participation, not a final report card. There is no denying the players have a goal in mind, but springtime is about learning; judgement is for another time. Good schools resist always adding up points, find a way to have students worry less about a gpa and more about effort, and convince kids to believe that who they are today is only a fraction of who they will be tomorrow. Spring baseball is a time when everyone gets to dream about being a star. Guys who are likely to be playing AA ball are shagging flies on the same field as an All-Star. There is a greater chance that you will see a "no name" in the line-up than "King Felix." There seems something really healthy in schools when the culture allows everyone to shine, rather than just "the best and brightest." I read that during the Mariners' camp last week, second basemen were playing in the outfield and pitchers were taking batting practice. Spring is a time for trying that new pitch and relearning how to run bases. Schools are the most alive when they can inspire kids to be open to new things. They are most effective when the same can be said for the adults in the schools. Somehow baseball in the spring is a kid's game. It's okay to trot around the bases, wear a hat backwards, sign autographs, lay in the grass. A thoughtful school looks for more ways to laugh, to find rest in the midst of busyness, and to let learning come in unexpected ways and in the most unlikely places. Spring training is leisurely, a game with no clock. The times I went, I would get to the game early and sit in the outfield cheap seats. Some players would be throwing the ball but most would just be stretching. I'd point out the ones with zinc oxide on their noses, reminding my own redheads to "lather up." Spring training reminds me that taking the time to care for yourself is key to preparing for anything. Schools that remember that helping everyone take care of themselves-physically and emotionally-levels the playing field for all. Feeling safe and cared for is the only way kids will enter the game with joy, confidence, and heart. I look forward to us entering our spring trimester at St. Pat's. Instead of seeing it as "getting close to the end of school," I hope that we recognize it as "our season to be better than ever." Peace and in eternal optimism for the M's, Chris

Spring Musical
It's time to audition for the Saint Pat's Spring Musical Theater production!
BUGSY MALONE
An hilarious spoof of the 1920's filled with comedy, a large-cast of characters, fun music, awesome costumes, and fantastic dances to learn!
All students in grades 4-8 are invited and encouraged to participate! There is NO experience necessary to participate in this program... so if your child has ever wanted to try their hand at acting, singing, and dancing now is their chance! All interested students will have a spot in this show.
There will also be opportunities for students who would like to learn about the technical side of theater. Several assistant positions in dramaturgy (research), design, costumes, make-up, orchestra and backstage help will also be available.
Auditions will be held March 1-10, 2016 in the Music Room. Students should come down to Room 101, pick up an Audition Packet, and sign up for a time slot during their lunch or after school. To audition, students only need to sing a portion of a song (any song) that they know well. They will then be led through some range exercises and taught some music from the show. That's it!
Rehearsals will be held after school from March 21-May 19, with performances May 20-22. No student will be required to be at all rehearsals. More information about the rehearsal schedule and casting can be found in the Audition Packet. Students should see Mrs. Lewis
(or email mlewis@saintpats.org) for more information about the show, rehearsals, or joining the production team.

Curriculum Day
Just what will be happening on Curriculum Day?
This month, our region's Catholic Schools are going to pilot a new Curriculum Day event, which was designed to provide articulation and collaboration amongst our school teachers and administration members. On March, 11, we will have visiting faculty from three of the region schools observing St. Patrick Catholic School in progress.
On March 18, it will be our turn as teachers and administrators, along with the remaining three schools in the region, to observe St. Charles Borromeo in session. During each day, teachers will have time to both visit classrooms and to gather with others for discussion. As educators, it is rare to have time to really talk and work with other teachers, particularly those from another school, and we anticipate that these events will provide valuable opportunities to do just that.
Our goal is to create community and collegiality between our Catholic Schools, to share resources, best practices, and strategies to help increase learning and promote positive experiences for all students.

From the Parish
The Sacramental Preparation Retreat was held March 5th. The children preparing for First Holy Communion together with their parents, spent Saturday afternoon in community, praying and learning.
We thought about Jesus' life, death, and resurrection: The Paschal Mystery. Families brought crucifixes from their homes to look at and to discuss. This helped to connect us to one another as a community in our shared faith. We also enjoyed a simple meal and social time together.
Please continue to pray for our 54 children and families. First Holy Communion is April 23 and 24.
Saint Patrick Youth group meets every other Sunday from 4-5:30 PM in the Parish Center. We have fun, great fellowship, games, food, and grow in our faith. Come every time we meet or whenever you can make it. Bring a friend and join us.
