Where Are We?

I used to ask that question all the time before GPS.  My wife, the engineer, loves maps and she is the kind of person who gives directions by saying, "go East to Highway 145, then head South for 4 miles before you turn North onto 101".  I am the kind of guy who appreciates, "go 5 blocks till you see Starbucks on your right, turn left for a half mile, and at the stop light intersection, you will be next to a Shell station-turn right."   I drove her crazy, I never knew where we were.  GPS has saved our marriage..

It's nearly March, and as important is the question where are we?,  I think the real question is where are we going?  You know the old adage, if you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there.  As we look ahead, there are at least three areas I want us to be on the right road with or without GPS.

Accreditation:  In the next few months we will be reviewing all of our committee reports and writing our first draft of our findings.  We will be undertaking an in-depth look at our Math program as part of our accreditation work beginning with me observing in every math class this week.  Our goal is to have our report of findings ready for you, our stake holders, to discuss at a late April meeting.  At that time, we will also have our recommendations for our School Improvement Plan.  Your feedback will be critical answering where are we going?

Academics:  We will be meeting to determine pre-Honors math and accelerated math program.  This involves teachers from grades 5 through 8 with Kathy Miner as the lead.  Our goal is to have 6th grade students be able to test into pre-algebra after their successful completion of the pre-Honors course.
We are really looking forward to integrating more technology into our classrooms and with the Fund-an-item interactive boards and greater internet reliability, we will see a dramatic difference of technology assisted instruction and learning.
We are heading into a new model for early childhood learning with specific classes for 3 year olds and 4 year olds.  The curriculum will designed more developmentally and build on each other right through 1st grade.  Outside specialists are assisting us with this new design.

Student support: We want to build on our understanding of differentiating instruction especially with students who need additional help.  Better assessment of math and writing skills will help us design strategies for closing learning gaps.  Our learning goals are clear and standards appropriately high but we will be working on developing stronger assessment tools, more sophisticated analysis and clearer communication patterns with parents and amongst each other.  This is essential if we want all of our students to be and feel successful.

I know we are just beginning the month of March and we have lots of school left but our eyes need to be on the road in front of us and alert to the road yet unseen.

I look forward to that journey together,

Chris

Spring Musical

It's time to audition for the Saint Pat's Spring Musical Theater production!

BUGSY MALONE
An hilarious spoof of the 1920's filled with comedy, a large-cast of characters, fun music, awesome costumes, and fantastic dances to learn!

All students in grades 4-8 are invited and encouraged to participate! There is NO experience necessary to participate in this program... so if your child has ever wanted to try their hand at acting, singing, and dancing now is their chance! All interested students will have a spot in this show.

There will also be opportunities for students who would like to learn about the technical side of theater. Several assistant positions in dramaturgy (research), design, costumes, make-up, orchestra and backstage help will also be available.

Auditions will be held March 1-10, 2016 in the Music Room. Students should come down to Room 101, pick up an Audition Packet, and sign up for a time slot during their lunch or after school. To audition, students only need to sing a portion of a song (any song) that they know well. They will be then be led through some range exercises and taught some music from the show. That's it!

Rehearsals will be held after school from March 21-May 19, with performances May 20-22. No student will be required to be at all rehearsals. More information about the rehearsal schedule and casting can be found in the Audition Packet. Students should see Mrs. Lewis
(or email mlewis@saintpats.org) for more information about the show, rehearsals, or joining the production team.

Grandparents Day

We will be celebrating Grandparents Day on March 17.  Please ask your guests to save the date. More information about the event will be available soon.

Community Ministry

Question of the Week:

"How do we show that we are with God all the way, even on discouraging days?"

Join us on Thursday, March 3 for All School Mass at 8:45 AM.

Paper Making in Kindergarten

For the past few weeks, St. Patrick kindergarten students have been investigating and learning all about the properties of wood and paper.

On Thursday, Pat Toohey, Director of L'Arche Farm and Gardens, Debbie Wilson, and Debra Velder, members of the L'Arche community spent the day teaching kindergarten students how to make paper using recycled materials.  Each student was able to turn pulp into paper during a fascinating process.

Grounds Work

School Grounds Work Session on Saturday, March 12 from 9am to 1pm. As usual, wear your work clothes and bring work gloves; refreshments provided.

General weeding and cleanup is needed all around the campus. Bring lawn/garden tools if you have them and remember electrical power is limited so gas powered tools are best - blowers, trimmers, etc.

Any questions please reply or call/text Rob Silva at
253-592-0865.

Grounds Work counts for double commitment hours. Thank you for you continued support!

CYO

Volleyball
Our volleyball teams played their second or third games this weekend.  Here is the summary of the 6th and 7th grade teams:

The 6th grade volleyball team won their match against All Saints!  Despite losing the first set, the St. Pat's 6th grade team rallied and won the final 2 sets, clinching the victory for St. Pat's!  Way to go!

The 7th graders had a tough loss on Saturday against Visitation dropping all 3 games.  There were some good rallies, but we came up short by just a couple points. We look forward to preparing for their next match.

Our schedule is as follows (please note that all matches are at St. Charles):
8th grade plays St. Charles at 8:30 am and All Saints at 9:15 am
7th grade plays Visitation at 11:30 am
6th grade plays Visitation at 1:45 pm
5th grade plays St. Nicks at 2:30 pm

Good luck teams!

Track, Softball and Baseball
We have not had teams in these CYO sports for the spring, mainly because the meets and games are north in Seattle.  However, if you are interested, we might be able to find you a team down here that participates in these sports.  Several St. Pats' students have competed with All Saints, St. Vincents and Holy Rosary in track.  Please let the athletic director know if you and your son/daughter have any interest in participating in these sports.  His email is cyoathletics@saintpats.org.

Students of Interest

We are inspired by our students' engagement in service to others.

Our 3rd through 5th grade students supported and learned about COFIA and the students in Uganda during our recent Global Service Free Dress Day. The video and photos below tell the story of their service and connection to COFIA last Friday.

Top Soccer

Our students have several opportunities for service activities throughout the year.

A group of students regularly volunteer with Top Soccer on the weekends. The program offers an opportunity for kids with various developmental and/or physical disabilities to learn to play soccer.

From the Parish

 Holy Door Pilgrimage

On March 6, 2016- parishioners are invited to a Parish Pilgrimage of Mercy- to walk together through the Holy Doors of St. James Cathedral. The day will end with Vespers, which includes Exposition, Lenten Vespers and Benediction.
There will be time for personal prayer in the Cathedral or an opportunity to participate in a self-guided Way of Mercy through the Cathedral, beginning at the Doors of Mercy and continuing with prayer stations at important places throughout the Cathedral for 15-20 minutes.
