Hope to see you soon, Happy New Year.

We were invited to spend part of our Christmas holiday in Hawaii at the home of my sister-in-law.  It worked out perfectly to share companion fares so the four of us flew to the Big Island on Christmas night.

One evening, our post Christmas dinner conversation turned to, "Are you making New Year's resolutions?"  Without a lot of emotion, a list emerged that seemed all too common: better diet, more exercise, reading instead of TV, exercising while watching TV!  My 24 year old Connor said, "That's why I don't make resolutions, there really isn't a commitment to them."  I mentioned, "I want to keep my list really short this year so I do commit to it."  Doreen asked, "Well, what is that really important thing you want to do this year?"  "I'm still thinking about it," I replied.

Two days after that conversation, we are walking on the rim of Kilaeua, one of the most active volcanoes on the planet.  It is a mysterious, bleak, but beautiful place.  We began our hike when there were few people walking over the lava fields so the entire experience felt sacred,  In the most quiet times of the hike, my mind drifted back to my New Year's resolution comment-"I'm still thinking about it."  Nothing yet.

As we moved into the lush volcanic hillside, my phone pinged.  After the initial reaction, "How do I get reception here?", I took a peek to see my message.  It was from a long-time friend who has had two recent bouts with cancer. I realized that I had been thinking about Cam for the last six months but I hadn't called him. His text was simple, "Hope to see you soon, Happy New Year."

I decided right then that my resolution list should be long. But, instead of thinking about what is really important to do, I decided to think about who is really important. My resolution is to "think about" people every morning that I can pray for and start my day that way.  I can pray whether I am eating healthy, or not, exercising or watching TV.  My prayer can be a mantra of thanksgiving for individuals or it can be a prayer of petition for their well-being.  I will tell Connor I can commit to this resolution because prayer is as easy as remembering all of the people in my life who I wish I could see soon.

C.S. Lewis wrote this about prayer: "Lay before Him what is in us not what ought to be in us."

Be assured of my prayers for your families in this new year.

JOIN THE FUN IN THE SAINT PATRICK CATHOLIC SCHOOL CHOIR!

Open Registration for all interested 4th-8th grade students will be available from January 4-14, 2016. If you've heard the Choir and want to know more about how to join this program, Choir Information and Registration forms are available on the board outside of the music room (Rm. 101), or you can contact Mrs. Lewis via email.

The Saint Patrick Catholic School Choir is an exciting musical opportunity for all students in grades 4 through 8. In Choir, students not only have the opportunity to learn songs, but to also receive professional singing instruction, learn music theory, and receive coaching in performance, presentation, vocal health and team-building skills - all in a group setting. Choir students also experience an enhanced understanding of literature, physiology, math, liturgy, and a cultural awareness through the exposure to foreign languages and history. Our students are fully prepared to succeed in the reputable music programs at Bellarmine Prep and other area high schools.

Students interested in auditioning for the Saint Pat's Musical Theater production in the spring are highly encouraged to join choir.

The Choir rehearses four mornings each week, Monday-Thursday, from 7:30-8:25 am.  No singing or musical experience is necessary to join the Saint Patrick School Choir.  Students learn and perform a variety of music styles from sacred liturgical, to classic and contemporary choral, to musical theater. Choir students perform their music in public on a regular basis throughout the year, including at school masses and prayer services, assemblies, concerts, parish luncheons and community events.

Open Registration to join Choir is held twice each year: during the first two weeks of the school year in September, and again during the first two weeks upon returning to school after Christmas Break in January.

What a great response to our last food drive collection of cereal for the St. Leo's Food Connection! Thank you to all of those who were able to donate.  The next pick up from our school will be this Friday, January 8.  For this collection, we are asking students and their families to donate baby food and infant formula.  Our St. Leo Food Bank is an infant feeding site, meaning they provide baby food and formula to families with infants. For more information on the Food Connection please see their website at www.foodconnection.org. Thank you for your support!

Tuition Assistance

Fulcrum Foundation Hossfled Tuition Assistance Program
We Are Currently Accepting Applications For 2016-2017

It's our mission to make Catholic schools accessible for families and students. For the 2016-2017 school year, a Fulcrum Foundation Hossfeld Tuition Assistance grant will provide $1,100 towards elementary tuition and $1,250 towards high school tuition. Grants are distributed annually to students in grades K-12 and are awarded on the basis of financial need.

Beginning this fall, Fulcrum is partnering with FACTS to manage the collection and processing of tuition assistance applications. Award decisions will still be made by Fulcrum and will still be based on financial need.

It costs $24 per family (no matter how many students) to apply for a Fulcrum Foundation tuitionassistance grant. You will be reimbursed for the full $24 even if you do not receive an award, but your student must be enrolled in a Catholic school for the 2016-2017 school year.

Important:  Please read the Frequently Asked Questions prior to applying!  The FAQ contains important information about who should apply and gives financial guidelines that are helpful for determining your eligibility.

Click Here to Apply for Fulcrum Tuition Assistance

St. Patrick Catholic School is also offering financial aid for the 2016/17 school year as usual. We would like any family in need of assistance to please complete this application. It is not necessary to also apply for the Hossfeld Tuition Assistance program as in years past.   If you have any questions about this change please contact Bonnie Viafore in the school office at (253)272-2297 or bviafore@saintpats.org. Thank you!
