Christmas Wishes

In this Sunday's Gospel, there was a line that struck me.  It wasn't the most important nor did it receive any commentary in the homily, but it stirred something in me. The Gospel was about John the Baptist and the crowd's questions about what they should do to repent.  While it was a powerful scene to imagine, it was the second paragraph that ignited my memory, when it began with the phrase: "The people were full of expectation."

I remember listening to a friend tell a bunch of high school kids the story of his Christmas when he asked for a Bat Masterson cowboy doll.  He said he had made a Christmas wish-list consisting of only one item: that doll.  Grandparents, Mom and Dad, even Santa, all were given the same request.  My friend relayed the story that his Christmas wish had moved into an expectation. "I knew I was going to get it," he said.  What Tony received that year was a black belt.  A present "that was probably more than my parents could afford that year but one that devastated me that Christmas morning."

I remember everyone laughing at that story when he told it.  We all ached for him as a little boy knowing how much he must have wanted that action figure.  As the laughter settled down, Tony told the group of kids that the Jewish people were expecting God to be a powerful king to save them.  They were God's chosen people, and they were "full of expectation."  He reminded us that as good and faithful as the people were, their wish, their prayer, turned into a demand.  And when they didn't get a gunslinger-but rather a baby born in a manger in Bethlehem-it must have felt like a black belt.

As we move closer to Christmas morning and my expectations rise that I will find the perfect gift for Doreen and the kids, or I wrestle with how to respond to "What is on your wish list, Uncle Chris?," I am thankful that today's Gospel helped me to remember the story of Bat Masterson.  It's a little too easy to let the joy of Christmas wishes turn into a list of things I've got to have or have to do.  My memory of a story about a little black belt came at a perfect time for me.

It is probably more than we deserve, but God once again offers the greatest Christmas gift we could ever expect to receive: his Son.  Let us rejoice and be glad!

Wishing you a most blessed Christmas and a joyous new year.

Chris

From the Development Director

Annual Fund 16 Update

Dear Parents,

On behalf of Saint Patrick Catholic School, Faculty and Staff, I'd like to personally thank each of you for your gracious support of Annual Fund 16. I especially would like to recognize the leadership of our Co-Chairs, Molly Langdon and Angela Sorenson.

To date, Molly and Angela have raised $143,000 and anticipate another $15,000 in Matching Funds, to bring the total Annual Giving to $158,000! As a parent, and as your Director of Development, I am so grateful for Molly and Angela's energy, enthusiasm and support. Congratulations to our Co-Chairs and to the St. Patrick Catholic School community!

As we close Annual Fund 16, I would like to thank each family that participated in our newly incorporated Letter Writing Campaign. Inspired by our Co-Chairs, this effort generated $5,000 to the overall goal. Students from Pre-Kindergarten through 8th Grade sent out 185 letters. Thank you to those families and faculty that supported this effort.

A special note of thanks to all our school families and parish friends that participated in Annual Fund 16. Even more important than the funds raised, is our community's engagement in this effort. To date, 70% of our school families participated in Annual Fund 16 at various levels. No gift is too small or too grand. As a faith community we are called, each of us, to  give our time, talent and treasure. Each gift strengthens our case for why St. Patrick's School is a thriving, faith-filled community with families that care about and support one another. Thank you.

To note our gratitude, we will be listing all participating families in our January newsletters. If you have yet to pledge to Annual Fund 16, please consider making your pledge or gift by December 31, 2016. All pledges are to be fulfilled by May 31, 2016.

In closing, I want to convey my deepest gratitude to all our St. Patrick Parish and School supporters. I know the blessings this community bestows upon my own family and I'm so grateful to serve as your Director of Development as we move into the new year.

With a humble, happy heart, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and blessed New Year!

Christy Johnson

St. Patrick School celebrates the third week of Advent by focusing on the spirit of joy that comes with the birth of our Savior, Messiah, and Redeemer on Christmas Day.

Our next food drive for the Food Connection begins this week with a focus on collecting baby food (to be picked up on January 8.)

Sacrament of Reconciliation will be celebrated with students on Thursday as we prepare our hearts for Christmas.   We wish you a joyful set of Christmas weeks with the children who brighten our school each day!

CYO

Basketball
Here are the game updates that have been received by Sunday night.

The 4th grade boys had a decisive win over Visitation, 18-9.  The boys worked together as a team passing the ball and everyone gave 100% on defense.

The 5th boys played a great game on Saturday.  Our boys displayed sportsmanship, growth and hard work.  We won our first game of the season.  Congratulations!!

The 6th grade girls are 3 for 3 so far with the win over Annie Wright on Sunday. Ellie (6), Jo (10), Lillian (6), Natalie (2), Robyn (4), and Ryan (6) all added points to the board.  The Shamrocks led 20-0 at the half.  Although the score board didn't "technically" advance in the 2nd half, some crisp play calls, key offensive rebounds and an overall good passing game led to a gain of another 14 points for a 34-6 victory.

The 7th grade girls played the St. Pat's 8th grade team. With a lot of smiles and laughter competing against each other, the 7th grade girls finished the game victorious, 18-11.

Tuition Assistance

Fulcrum Foundation Hossfled Tuition Assistance Program
We Are Currently Accepting Applications For 2016-2017

It's our mission to make Catholic schools accessible for families and students. For the 2016-2017 school year, a Fulcrum Foundation Hossfeld Tuition Assistance grant will provide $1,100 towards elementary tuition and $1,250 towards high school tuition. Grants are distributed annually to students in grades K-12 and are awarded on the basis of financial need.

Beginning this fall, Fulcrum is partnering with FACTS to manage the collection and processing of tuition assistance applications. Award decisions will still be made by Fulcrum and will still be based on financial need.

It costs $24 per family (no matter how many students) to apply for a Fulcrum Foundation tuitionassistance grant. You will be reimbursed for the full $24 even if you do not receive an award, but your student must be enrolled in a Catholic school for the 2016-2017 school year.

Important:  Please read the Frequently Asked Questions prior to applying!  The FAQ contains important information about who should apply and gives financial guidelines that are helpful for determining your eligibility.

St. Patrick Catholic School is also offering financial aid for the 2016/17 school year as usual. We would like any family in need of assistance to please complete this application. It is not necessary to also apply for the Hossfeld Tuition Assistance program as in years past.   If you have any questions about this change please contact Bonnie Viafore in the school office at (253)272-2297 or bviafore@saintpats.org. Thank you!
