Legacy
In his book, Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell writes about very successful people from a variety of professional fields. While acknowledging genetic attributes, Gladwell poses that highly successful people are successful primarily because of the, "cultural legacies that allow them to learn and work hard and make sense of the world in ways that others can't." In his research, Gladwell stresses that the, "culture we belong to and the legacies passed down by our forebears shape the patterns of our achievement in ways we cannot begin to imagine." Gladwell begins his book, Outliers, The Story of Success with this: "We all know that successful people come from hardy seeds. But do we know enough about the sunlight that warmed them, the soil in which they put down their roots? The story of success is not simply the story of a lone tree but the story of the forest." This year's Annual Fund theme is Creating a Legacy - it comes from that foundational understanding that we all have been the recipients of those who have come before us. It is about recognizing the opportunities we have been given, come in great part, from those who have toiled the soil in preparation for our arrival. The theme of our Annual Fund is about this gift and how we build that place where our kids learn, work hard, and find their God-given talents. I know our school community that has been in Tacoma for over 122 years has deep roots. The legacy of abiding faith, intellectual curiosity and commitment to justice is ours to build from for our children and for our children's children. Your prayerful consideration of this year's Annual Fund will ensure that the legacy of St. Patrick School continues, and through it, provide opportunities in ways we cannot begin to imagine. Our goal is not modest because our needs are great. Our goal of $150,000 adds to our endowment from which we build our future; helps finance our financial aid which builds our community; and supports our academic and spiritual programs which forms the hearts and minds of our kids. I am hoping you will join this year's co-chairs Angela and Molly in giving generously to our Annual Fund - all of us have the opportunity be part of the legacy that is the story of St. Pat's. They will share more about Annual Fund 16 at Back to School Night on Thursday. I look forward to seeing you at Back To School Night. peace, Chris

Volunteer Training
There are many opportunities to volunteer at school and we want to make it as easy as possible for our school families to do so. To volunteer here at St. Patrick Catholic School the following must be completed:
1. Background Checks Volunteers with unsupervised, ongoing access to minors and vulnerable adults are required to complete a background check every three years. Screening is also required from any volunteer with access to cash, checks or other negotiables; any volunteer driving in the course of their service; and any volunteer who is not related to a student in a Catholic school.
2. Policies All volunteers are required to read and sign the Policy for the Prevention of and Response to Sexual Abuse, Code of Professional Conduct, and Reporting Suspected Abuse of Minors and Vulnerable Adults.
3. Safe Environment Training Volunteers with unsupervised, ongoing access to minors and vulnerable adults are required to complete the Protecting God's Children course within 90 days of beginning service . Current volunteers are required to take updated online training courses every three years.
We will be hosting in the school's library the "Protecting God's Children" class for new volunteers on Wednesday, September 23th beginning at 6:30 p.m. To attend this class you must log-on to VirtusOnline.org to register and establish an account with the Archdiocese and follow the steps to becoming compliant with all Safe Environment requirements.
All current employees and volunteers who have already completed the Safe Environment requirements will be automatically transferred into the new database. VIRTUS sent log-on information to every current participant in August. Those who have already attended a Called to Protect for Ministries class will not be required to take the VIRTUS foundation class, Protecting God's Children. These individuals will be notified by VIRTUS when it is time to renew their background check and/or take an online refresher course, which is now required every three years.

CYO
Welcome back to another year of CYO athletics. CYO stands for Catholic Youth Organization. It created an athletic division years ago. It is different than other athletic leagues. The main differences are that we celebrate through prayer and acknowledgment of competition and our opponents. The volunteer coaches strive to introduce children to each game and help them become better athletes, but they strive to always focus on sportsmanship, fairness and becoming better people through the competition and stress that sports create. Our school's athletic director is Matt Smith and if you have any questions, please contact him at cyoathletics@saintpats.org.
Our Cross Country team is up and running (!!!) and had their first meet on Saturday, September 12th at Bellarmine High School. Thank you to all the volunteers. Your efforts make this sport work and help model for our kids many qualities we want them to learn. Congratulations to all of our runners on Saturday - Finnian, David, Jordan, Aiden, Emilio, Liam, Johnathan, Addison, Brooklyn, Sophia, Alex, Shane, and Liberty. Many achieved personal bests, and collectively Saint Pat's took away 1st, 7th, 8th, and 10th places. Keep working hard!! If you have any questions please contact the head coach Megan Miller or the athletic director, Matt Smith. The athletic director can be reached at cyoathletics@saintpats.org.
CYO basketball will start forming teams for 4th-8th grades at the end of September. Practice will start in October. Season play will begin in late November/early December. The season runs through the end of January.
CYO volleyball starts forming teams for 5th-8th grades in February. Practice will start in February. Games start in March. The season runs through April.
There are several other athletics that are offered through the Sno-King CYO program. Saint Pats has not had its own team in these sports, yet! These sports are soccer, baseball, softball and track.

Coding With Kids
Coding With Kids is one of the fastest growing Coding academies in the NW! Coding With Kids is one of the best coding programs for kids ages K-8th grade. Now this exciting new program has come to Pierce & Peninsula Counties! Coding with Kids program teaches computer programming to elementary and middle school children. CWK currently serves 40+ schools in the Seattle/Bellevue/Redmond areas and most of the classes have waiting lists, because the curriculum is so rich.
As previously mentioned, this academy offers classes for students in kindergarten grades and up to 8th currently. The curriculum grows with the students and takes them from the beginnings through quite advanced coding concepts. Every child can learn how to code and the classes are fun and creative, where kids build their own games and animations, but also focus on teaching core programming concepts and good coding practices - great skills for any future career, from technology experts to fashion designers and much more. Catechetical Sunday
Saint Patrick Catholic Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday the weekend of September 19 - September 20, 2015. Those whom the community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry.
Catechetical Sunday is an invitation to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. Catechists from the following groups will be called forward: R.C.I.A., ReMembering Church, and the Children's RCIA; Baptism, First Reconciliation and First Communion, Confirmation, Youth Ministry, teachers at Saint Patrick Catholic School, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, Young Adult Ministry, Adult Bible Study, Family Based Catechesis, Vacation Bible School, Walking with Purpose, Men's Prayer Group and Children's Rosary Group.
On Catechetical Sunday, we not only honor and bless those whom the community has designated to serve as catechists. In addition, we honor and bless the role of parents, grandparents, and guardians in their role as primary catechists of their children.
