Fun for Free

It's true that some of the best things in life are free and Tempe offers a bunch of fun activities and events that don't require deep pockets to be enjoyed. There's a lot to do at no cost to you!

Gallery of Scientific Exploration, open 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday. You can spend hours roaming the Gallery of Scientific Exploration, located in the Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building IV (ISTB 4), on the ASU Tempe Campus. You'll get a taste of space, the final frontier, as you roam the gallery. You'll see fascinating kiosk-style interactive exhibits and large-format, high-definition monitors that display video from Earth-observing satellites and robotic probes of other worlds. Visit the Marston Exploration Theater for 3-D planetarium-style shows (although on a flat screen). On the second floor, you can get a close up look at the university's meteorite exhibit.

Tempe History Museum

Super Summer Adventures at Tempe History Museum Wild Wednesdays and Super Saturdays, June 10-July 25, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Kids will experience different kinds of music, play musical instruments and enjoy performances, hands-on activities, crafts and games that follow the musical themes of the day. These free activities are part of The Tempe Sound exhibition, which highlights local music legends.

The District at Tempe Marketplace, Friday and Saturday evenings, 7-10 p.m. Take a walk through the District at Tempe Marketplace on Friday and Saturday evenings and enjoy some great live music. During your shopping trip or post-dinner stroll, you can listen to talented musicians on The District Stage and by the fountain near Barnes & Noble. The comfy seating areas, outdoor fireplaces and water features are the perfect setting for relaxing, people watching and dancing to the beat.

Music in the Garden at Desert Botanical Garden

Savor a fun spring evening at a Desert Botanical Garden Music in the Garden concert. It's lovely sitting outside in the serene surroundings of the Desert Botanical Garden, enjoying live music. The music includes a wide range of genres like Jazz, Latin Jazz, blues, Native American and world music.

Arrive early and enjoy dinner before the music begins. There are two excellent dining choices: Gertrude's, where you can dine indoors or outdoors on the patio; or outdoors near the concert stage at the Patio Café. Plus, arriving early offers the additional bonus of seeing one of our spectacular Arizona sunsets. Concerts take place at Ullman Terrace every Friday evening through June 26.
