ACC Regents Approve 2016-17 Budget

Regents approved a $29.14 million budget for the 2016-17 fiscal year during their meeting on July 28. Regents plan to approve the tax rate during a meeting on August 25. Regents will consider the effective tax rate of 19.17 cents per $100 of appraised property value. The effective tax rate is the rate required to raise the same amount of revenue as the current fiscal year. If approved, the new tax rate would be a 6 percent decrease from the 2015-16 fiscal year rate. The approved budget is 3.5 percent more than the 2015-16 fiscal year budget. The additional revenue is due to the amount of new construction in the ACC district. Read the full story about the meeting.

Message from the President of ACC
One of the most rewarding aspects of working at a community college is that we serve so many different kinds of students and share their joy when we help change their lives. That is why we are so honored that ACC was recently selected as one of 67 colleges and universities in the nation to be an experimental site for the Second Chance Pell program. This program will allow eligible inmates in our service area to access Pell grants in order to seek higher education, something that they have not been able to do since 1994. Research shows that if inmates receive the benefit of education while incarcerated, they are 43% less likely to return to prison within three years. Pell grants do not have to be repaid.

Some of you may know that 51 years ago, ACC was the first college in the state of Texas to offer higher education opportunities to inmates. We are very excited this federal program will allow ACC to expand upon an already successful partnership with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. After receiving news that we will take part in the Second Chance Pell Program for our TDCJ students, our TDCJ director Sara Bouse and Financial Aid director Dora Sims attended a conference in Washington D.C. regarding grant implementation. Sara also gave an outstanding interview with the NPR affiliate in Austin about the Second Chance Pell grants.

We look forward to implementing this project and to having an even larger impact on the TDCJ population, their families and ultimately our community.

Welcome to ACC!

Fins Up!
