President Hosts Information Meeting Wednesday on May 7 Bond Issue

ACC will hold an information meeting on Wednesday, April 6, at 7 p.m. to discuss the $88.5 million bond issue on the ballot for the Saturday, May 7 election. The meeting will be hosted by college President Dr. Christal Albrecht. There will be a presentation that includes the State of The College, a review of ACC's Strategic Plan and other information that led to the Board of Regents calling the May 7 Bond Election. At the conclusion of the presentation, Dr. Albrecht and staff will answer questions from the public regarding how the projects were determined and how they were prioritized.The community is invited to attend the event. Regents Approve Cost Saving Measures

Regents voted unanimously approved contracts that would lower the college's insurance premiums and energy costs during their meeting on March 24. The board voted to renew its insurance policy with Victory Insurance to lower its annual premium to $413,598, which is a $60,917 decrease, or 12.8 percent, from the previous year. Regents also approved a contract with Tradition Energy consulting firm which will review prices for electricity and help secure the lowest price for ACC. The college could save approximately $279,000 over a five-year period with the current market conditions. A future electricity contract would take effect in summer 2018. Read more about the meeting. 
ACC Hosts Local High Schools at Amazing Race to College

ACC hosted several hundred students from local high schools on March 31 to learn about their education opportunities at ACC. Students from Alvin and Manvel High Schools toured the campus, spoke with instructors, watched demonstrations and more during the Amazing Race to College. Students also entered their names into drawings for six $250 scholarships.
Student to Join NASA Program this Summer
 
Student Chelsi Nelson, of Pearland, will be joining the astronauts and engineers that make space travel possible at NASA this summer after she was named one of the agency's Community College Aerospace Scholars, or NCAS, for 2016. Nelson was one of 216 students across the country selected to participate in the four-day workshop at Johnson Space Center on May 22-25. To be selected for the NCAS program, students had to complete a five-week online course. During the workshop, Nelson will have the opportunity to work with NASA engineers and staff members as they learn about careers in science and engineering. Students will also form teams and establish fictional companies interested in Mars exploration. The teams will develop and test a prototype rover, form a company infrastructure, manage a budget and develop communications and outreach. Read the full story. 

DCVS instructor Suzanne Poston and student Erin Haynes, of Dickinson participated in the American Heart Association's Bay Area Go Red Day Luncheon to raise awareness about heart diseases in women. Poston and other women who have had heart surgery or conditions modeled for the Survivors with Style fashion show during the luncheon. All of the women who modeled in the fashion show have had different heart ailments. "I hope that anyone who saw us on the runway carrying our banners (with descriptions of our individual struggle, like the name of my specific defect) thought, 'Wow, she's lived with that her whole life and it hasn't stopped her,'" Haynes said. Dealing with their conditions is what inspired both Poston and Haynes to pursue careers in Cardiovascular Sonography. Read their full story. 
SGA Hosts 4th Annual Dolphin Dash on April 16
  
Runners and walkers can run to benefit the Student Government Association during the 4th Annual Dolphin Dash 5k Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, April 16. Registration for the event is $20 and will include a T-shirt and refreshments. Runners and walkers can register starting at 7:30 a.m. outside the front entrance of the college. The race begins at 9 a.m. Those who register before April 16 receive a discounted rate of $15. There will be two divisions: runners 12 and younger and runners 13 and older. Nursing Students Learn Options During Open House
 
The ADN Department hosted an open house for universities offering an RN to BSN transfer program. Twelve universities participated to provide current and future nursing students information on pre-requisites and program type to help them in their educational pursuit. 
College to Showcase Programs in Pearland Education Fair

Business and Allied Health instructors will provide information to Pearland area students about their programs during the ACC Education Fair on April 21. Students can learn about careers that are available and how to get started. Instructors from healthcare, business and other Continuing Education/Workforce Development programs will be at the event. A Human Resources representative will also be at the event to offer information on full time and adjunct faculty positions at ACC.The Fair will be in the Shadow Creek Ballroom at the Hilton Garden Inn, 12101 Shadow Creek Parkway in Pearland from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. For more information contact marketing@alvincollege.edu or call 281-756-3550.
Learning Lab Hosts TSI Exam Camp
 
The Learning Lab will prepare students for the Texas Success Initiative exam during a one-day camp on April 16. There will be half-day and whole-day sessions available to prepare for testing in reading, writing and math. The camp is $15 per session. Lunch is included. Career Services Sponsors Job Fair on April 27

Workers who want to find an employment opportunity can meet with potential employers during the ACC Job and Resource Fair on April 27 at the Nolan Ryan Center from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The college is also working with employers and other local organizations to provide workers with a chance to learn about job search resources as well as providing information about programs at the college. The employer representatives will be accepting applications and may have job interviews for those who attend the event. Program Spotlight
Office Administration
ACC offers a two-year Associate's Degree as well as a certificate in Office Administration to prepare students for whatever they might face when it comes to office management. Every industry, whether it's industrial, medical, or technological, office administrators are needed to ensure that operations run smoothly. Students in the program learn in-depth skills in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and Access. Other software platforms they will learn include database administration, desktop publishing and Quickbooks. The median annual earnings of an executive administrative assistant is $35,960. Legal administrative assistants earn a median annual salary of $37,750 and medical administrative assistants earn an average annual salary of $27,320.
