ACC Regent Ballot Set for May 7 Elections
Five challengers and one incumbent are vying for three seats in the ACC Board of Regents election on Saturday, May 7. For position 7, Kam Marvel, of Alvin will face Patricia Hertenberger, of Alvin. The incumbent and board chair, L.H. "Pete" Nash did not seek reelection. In position 8, Andy Tacquard, of Alvin is facing Monica Morgan, of Pearland. The incumbent Mac Barrow did not seek re-election. In position 9, challenger Roger Stuksa, of Alvin will go against incumbent Karlis Ercums III, of Alvin. The winners will serve an unpaid, six-year term. Early voting will be April 25 to May 3. Election Day is Saturday, May 7. For more information visit www.brazoriacountyvotes.com.

Drama Dept. Presents A Year With Frog and Toad
 The Drama Department will begin musical performances of A Year With Frog and Toad on March 5. The musical is a production based on the children's tales of a toad and frog who experience several adventures in their woodland home. The musical is based on the Tony Award-winning production on Broadway. Performances on March 5 and 10-12 will be at 7:30 p.m. There will be a 2:30 p.m. performance on March 6. CEWD Receives $1.4 Million Grant
The Continuing Education/Workforce Development Division received a $1.4 million grant from the Texas Workforce Commission Skills Development Fund to provide training to local industry firms. The grant will train 559 employees working for INEOS and Team Industrial Services. The training includes courses in industrial safety, equipment repair/maintenance, plant processes and related technical applications of plant operations.The Skills Development Fund is a state-funded, job-training program that provides training opportunities for Texas businesses while helping workers increase their skill levels and wages. Culinary Instructor Named Chef of The Year
Culinary Arts instructor Chef Mary Bass was recently named Chef of the Year by the website Galveston.com. Chef Bass will also be featured on Cutthroat Kitchen on the Food Network on March 6. She was chosen among approximately 30 chefs who were originally nominated for the Chef of the Year award. Bass has been an adjunct instructor for the Culinary Arts program for six years. She has served as chef at Haak Winery, BLVD. Seafood in Galveston and has also run her own bakery. She is also an instructor at Kitchen Chick in Galveston. Artist Displays Unique Skills During Workshop
Dallas-based artist Randy Brodnax recently showed his alternative firing techniques for pottery during a two-day workshop, on March 1-2, as part of the Visiting Artists Program at the college. The Visiting Artists program is sponsored by the ACC Foundation through an Innovative Initiative Grant. The Innovative Initiative Grants are designed to encourage, facilitate, recognize and reward innovative and creative approaches to fulfill the mission of ACC. Court Reporting Students Post 100 Percent Pass Rate
 Five students from the Court Reporting program who took the recent license exam from the Texas Court Reporters Certification Board passed the test for a 100 percent pass rate. Only 24 students in Texas took the exam with 14 passing. ACC routinely posts among the highest pass rates in the state, instructors said. ACC students who received their license include Amy Caillouet, of Alvin; Haleigh Nava, of Spring; Michelle Rodriguez, of Houston; Joanna Sagastisado, of Houston and Ehdi Sepulveda, of Katy. As part of their certification as a court reporter in Texas, students must be able to write more than 200 words per minute on a stenography machine with 95 percent accuracy. Read the full story.

 Student Named to All-State Band
Flute player and student Karenmaria Oswalt, of Missouri City, was named to the Texas Community College All State Band. She performed recently in the All State Band Concert in San Antonio. Approximately 300 students from 22 community colleges try out for the All State Band every year and 80 to 90 are chosen to perform, Band Director David Griffith said. Out of the 30 flute players who submitted music to the selection panel, Oswalt was one of 10 who was picked. Read the story about Oswalt's selection.

Alvin ISD Students Win Scholarships in Science Fair
 More than 70 Alvin ISD high school and junior high students participated in the 21st Annual Alvin Science Fair at the ACC Gym on Feb. 11. During the science fair, students competed in individual and team categories: Science Product Showcase, Health and Medicine, Physics, Earth and Space, Botany & Environmental, Chemistry, Life Science Team and Physical Science Team. In addition to students receiving awards for first through third place and honorable mentions, three overall winners were announced and each awarded a $200 scholarship to ACC including: Alvin High School student Kaytlynn Welsch; Nolan Ryan Junior High Student Chloe Cambridge and Nolan Ryan Junior High student Preksha Vaghela. Observatory Hosting a Public Viewing on March 11
ACC will host a viewing of Jupiter, the Orion Nebula, Uranus, and the winter constellations at the college observatory on March 11. There will be telescopes set up around the observatory for stargazers to get a glimpse of the planets and constellations from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Parking will be available by the Science/Health Science Building of Mustang Road. PTK Honorees Inducted
The Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society inducted 25 new members during a ceremony on March 2. Guest speaker at the event was State Rep. Ed Thompson. Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society of two-year colleges. Members follow four hallmarks including scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship. To be eligible for Phi Theta Kappa, students must have completed at least 12 college credit hours at ACC and maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or above. Read the full list of inductees.

| Emergency Medical Technician |
ACC offers a degree and a certificate program for those interested in becoming an Emergency Medical Technician. is the field of caring for individuals during a medical emergency not occurring within a hospital. EMTs are usually the first to arrive at the scene of an accident, injury or illness, by ambulance or helicopter. The program includes class lectures, skills training, clinical training in hospital and ambulance settings. EMTs and paramedics are employed in a number of industries, including private ambulance firms, local governments, service providers, hospitals, industrial/occupational safety, fire department EMS agencies, disaster/special rescue teams, special event/entertainment medic, and police/tactical paramedic.
