College to Open Doors on Saturday, January 9
For students who work and may not have time to test, register or apply for financial aid during the week, ACC's Admissions Office will open its doors on Saturday, January 9 for the Super Saturday Registration Blitz. Staff members will be at the college from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Admissions Office to provide help for those wanting to take courses in the spring. Several services will be offered including state-required testing to attend college. Students must register for testing as soon as possible prior to January 9. The tests will be administered at 8:15 a.m. Those who need guidance on which courses to take can also visit with academic advisors. Financial Aid staff members will be available to help students apply for assistance to pay for their courses. Once students have finished testing and know which classes they want to take, they can then register for the 2016 spring semester. Students may also obtain their student ID, receive their parking permit and search for their books in the College Store. Spring Registration Open
Registration for the spring 2016 semester and holiday mini semester are now open. Classes for the 16-week semester and the first 8-week mini-semester will begin on January 19. Registration for the Second Start semester will be January 20 to February 4. Classes will start on February 15. Click for more information or to look at a schedule.

Police Academy Cadets Graduate in Ceremony
ACC had its graduation ceremony for the 105th Law Enforcement Academy on December 9. There were 24 cadets who received their certification. Several also received their badges including Jenny Humbird, who is now working for the Alvin Police Department. Cadet Robert Layton received the award for Top Academic Achiever, while cadet Douglas Bell received the the Top Gun in Firearms Training award. Learn more about the Law Enforcement Academy.

ACC Board of Regent Elections Filing Begins January 20
Three positions on the Board of Regents will be up for election on May 7. Filing for candidates will start January 20 and close February 19. Positions that will be on the ballot include Position 7 now held by incumbent Pete Nash, Position 8 held by Mac Barrow and Position 9 now held by Karlis Ercums III. Those elected will serve an unpaid, six-year term. Early voting will be from April 25 to May 3. Election day is Saturday, May 7.  LyondellBasell Awards Grant to ACC Process Tech
Industrial firm LyondellBasell awarded a $10,000 grant to the ACC Process Technology Department to fund expansion of the training lab and equipment purchases. The company has issued similar grants over the past several years in support of the Process Technology program. Read a story about the grant in the Pearland Journal.

ACC Hosts Big Band Concert on February 6 Jazz and swing dance enthusiasts will take over the dance floor during the Alvin Community College Big Band Concert on Saturday, February 6. The 17th Annual Evening of Big Band Music with the ACC Community Band will start at 7 p.m. and last dance will be 10 p.m. at the Nolan Ryan Center. The Big Swing Jazz Band will perform for the concert. The dance will be at the Nolan Ryan Center and doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and will include admission to the dance and light refreshments throughout the evening. Tickets are available at the Music Department, the Administrative office and at the ACC Marketplace online. They also will be sold at the door. Nurse Grads Receive Pin during Ceremony
Associate Degree Nursing graduates received their pins during a Pinning Ceremony on December 9. The Nurse Pinning ceremony includes the graduates receiving their pin, the lighting of the ceremonial lamps and reciting the Nurse's Pledge. Each of the graduates also had an opportunity to thank their families and friends for their support as well as thanking the ACC faculty for their role in earning their degree. Counselor Named Foster Care Liaison
 To provide a better transition for foster care students who age out of the system into higher education, the Texas Legislature recently passed a bill to encourage the creation of Foster Care Liaison Officers at each college and university. ACC recently appointed Counselor, Diana Stiles as the Foster Care Liaison Officer. The Liaison Officer is intended to help these students uncover the many resources available to them and assist with the adjustments they must make when enrolling and taking college courses. Stiles, a former foster mother, said the liaison program will be a tremendous benefit for foster care alumni who need guidance. Read the full story about the new law and its benefits.

College Hosts Breakfast With Santa
 ACC, Alvin ISD and many volunteers gave local children in need the opportunity to visit with Santa during the Breakfast with Santa event on December 5. More than 250 area families were treated to a pancake breakfast, donated food items and toys. The event has been held for the past 25 years in conjunction with the ACC Can Feed the Hungry/Alvin ISD Shellie Garza Memorial Food Drive.The college hosted two locations-at the ACC campus in Alvin and New Hope Church on 288.  CEWD/GED Students Graduate during Commencement Ceremony
Students in the Continuing Education/Workforce Development and GED programs received their certificates during a Commencement Ceremony on December 8. Certificates were awarded in Phlebotomy, Dental Assistant, Massage Therapy, Certified Nurse Aide, Veterinary Assistant, Medical Assistant and Welding.

Welcome back to ACC and to 2016! I hope everyone had pleasant holiday break and that each of you are excited to be back to work. Preparations are well under way for the start of our spring semester, which will be Tuesday, January 19, right after the Martin Luther King holiday. There is still time to register for 16-week classes, 8-week minimesters and 12-week second start classes. Make sure to check our online schedule of classes or stop by the campus to pick up a paper schedule to find the class that is perfect for you! Hope to see you soon on campus.
