ACC to Host Veteran's Day Ceremony

The college will host the annual Veteran's Day Ceremony on November 11 at 12:30 p.m. at the Memorial Wall between Buildings A and B. Guest speaker for the event will be ACC alum and veteran Tim Rojas. Additions will also be made to the Memorial Wall to commemorate servicemen from our area who have given their lives fighting in the War on Terror. Following the ceremony the college will then have a dedication for the new Veterans Center in G Building at 1 p.m.

ACC Regents Hear Abatement Proposal

INEOS USA presented a $4 million tax abatement proposal for construction of Project Redstone to the Board of Regents during their meeting on October 22. The abatement would be for 100 percent of the property taxes over the course of seven years for the construction of a $460 million linear alpha olefins (LAO) plant along Chocolate Bayou. According to company representatives, construction could begin in the second quarter of 2016 and finish in mid-2018. Read more about the meeting. 
Spring Registration Now Open

Registration for the spring 2016 semester is now open. Classes for the 16-week semester and the first 8-week mini-semester will begin on January 19. Registration for the Second Start semester will be January 20 to February 4. Classes will start on February 15. Click for more information or to look at a schedule. 
ACC Food and Toy Drive Accepting Donations

The annual ACC Can
Feed the Hungry Food Drive is now seeking donations. Baskets are set up throughout campus for non-perishable food items. Toy donations are also being accepted for the drive. The drive is sponsored by the Church of Christ Student Fellowship. The deadline to make donations is November 20. All of the donations will be distributed to families in need during the annual Breakfast with Santa event on December 5. For more information call 281-756-3552.
 
College Receives Grant to Update Firing Range

ACC received a $313,621 grant through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Target Range Grant Program to update the college firing range to handle rifle ammunition. The program is managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife and will pay for upgrades to the range including new backstop/traps, acoustical improvements and state-of-the-art target positioning systems with ten individual computerized control stations. The program will allow the college to provide classes in hunter safety and host meetings for state wildlife professionals and trainers. Read the full story about the grant.
Foundation to Host 16th Annual Gala

The red carpet will be put out for An Evening of Elegance during the 16th Annual ACC Foundation Gala. The event benefits ACC student scholarships. The Foundation will host the Gala on Friday, November 20 at 6 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Manvel. Dress for the event will be semi-formal. Gala festivities will begin with a social reception at 6 p.m. There will also be live and silent auctions during the Gala. After the dinner, the evening will feature music from the Big Swing Jazz Orchestra under the direction of David Griffith. Read more about the event. College Hosts Dual Credit Consortium

As Dual Credit enrollment continues to grow for local colleges, ACC hosted the Dual Credit Gulf Coast Consortium meeting on October 12 for advisors and directors. Representatives from the Gulf Coast colleges discussed a variety of topics facing Dual Credit including legislative changes, college readiness, tuition rates, course requirements, technical course offerings and more. The Gulf Coast Consortium includes: ACC, Brazosport College, Galveston College, Houston Community College , Lee College, Lone Star College College of the Mainland, San Jacinto College and Wharton College. Honors Society Inducts New Members

Whether it is someone looking to change their career, build on their education or a high school student wanting to earn credit, a wide variety of students joined the ACC chapter of Phi Theta Kappa during an induction ceremony on October 26. The newest members of the honors society are: Martha Alain, Madeline Allen, Jose Alonso, Faith Barajas, Joshlyn Belk, Faith Butts, Andrea Campbell, Omeili Chukwunonso, Molly Comeaux, Lisa Dreyfus, Rebecca Eckert, Emily Fedorchak, Katie Henry, Shane Hoffower, Reana Llamas, Onesimo Lopez, Yelitza Martinez, Jazmin Medina, Neisha  Pander, Rebecca Pritchard, Rachel Ray, Bethany Reed, Katherine Reeves, Victoria Ross, Melissa Serna, Chantelle Siewert, Christian Siewert, Angelica Smith and Candy Watling. ACC Hosts Fall Fitness Fair
 
The Allied Health programs sponsored the annual Fall Fitness Fair at the Science/Health Science Building on October 15. The various programs offered free breathing tests, artery scans and other tests. Flu shots were also available. Vendors also participated in the event. Some of the programs that participated include: Nursing, Respiratory Care, Dental Assissting, Emergency Medical Technology, Diagnostic Cardiovascular Sonography and many more. 
College Hosts Forum on Campus Carry Law

Vice President of Student Services Marilyn Dement and ACC Police Chief Ike Hamrick conducted a forum on October 27 to answer questions from students about the new campus carry bill. The law will take effect for community colleges on August 1, 2017 and will allow Concealed Handgun License holders to bring handguns on campus. No firearms are allowed on campus until the law is in effect. Students raised questions about which areas of the campus would not allow handguns, who is allowed to carry a weapon, whether a gun could be displayed and more. There will be additional forums in the future for faculty, staff and the community. Learn more about the law.
Students Present Research at Conference

Honors students Freyja Coe, of Friendswood and Karina Herr, of Manvel, presented their research projects during the Gulf Coast Intercollegiate Honors Consortium on October 16. Coe's project focused on vegan diets while Herr researched the effects of depression on the endocrine system. Several honors students will be attending a National Collegiate Honors Council in Chicago in November. 
Local Students Learn About ACC During Tours

Students from Manvel High School toured the college during a campus-wide tour on October 14. High school and middle school students from other districts in the region visited ACC on October 30. Students learned about the many different programs and services at ACC such as Culinary Arts, Massage Therapy, Nursing, EMT and many more. There were more than 150 Manvel students during the tour and was the first for the high school. More than 200 students from El Campo, Pearland, Danbury, Bay City and Texas City participated in the Allied Health tour.

Careers College

Wanting to give students and graduates a comprehensive approach to finding a job, Alvin Community College launched a new software program called Careers College that will provide several methods for job searching. Those who are attending or have attended ACC can now visit the Career Services Department and log on to the Careers College software. Students and graduates can sign in and train in modules related to many different areas such confidence building, development of attention-grabbing resumes, interviewing techniques, negotiating salaries, how to uncover hidden jobs and much more
