Registration for Second Start Semester Open
 
For students who want another chance to start their fall semester, they can consider registering for the 12-week Second Start semester. Registration is now open and will close on September 11. Classes will start on September 21. Registration for the second 8-week mini semester is also open and will close on October 8. Classes will begin on October 15.  Read more online about the Second Start and second mini semesters.

ACC recognized 19 retirees at a reception on August 20. The combined amount of experience from the retirees equals more than 500 years. 

ACC Approves 2015-16 Tax Rate
 
Regents approved the 2015-16 tax rate during their board meeting on August 27. The rate for the next fiscal year is 20.4 cents per $100 of property value, which is the current rate. The rate includes 18.29 cents for Maintenance and Operations while 2.1 cents will go towards voter-approved debt. The Board also approved a one-year contract extension for President Dr. Christal M. ACC Foundation 16th Annual Gala on November 20

The Foundation will lay out the red carpet for An Evening of Elegance during the 16th Annual ACC Foundation Gala. The event benefits ACC student scholarships. The Foundation will host the Gala on November 20 at 6 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Manvel. Dress for the event will be semi-formal. Gala festivities begin with a social reception at 6 p.m. There will also be live and silent auctions during the Gala. After the dinner, the Gala the evening will feature music from the Big Swing Jazz Orchestra under the direction of David Griffith. Read more about the event. Students Kick Off Fall Semester

Students Awarded Process Tech Scholarships

More than 40 students from local community colleges, including ACC, received scholarships from the Community College Petrochemical Initiative. Each were recognized during a luncheon on August 13 at the Nolan Ryan Center. Recipients from Alvin Community College included Joshua Huerta, Matthew Mitchell and Shemilore Oguntoye, who each received $1,500. ACC student Robert Robinson received $2,000. Read more about the Initiative and the luncheon.
DCVS Student Honored with Scholarship

Student Saydi Wollney, of Pearland, received a $2,500 scholarship from the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) Foundation. Wollney is due to graduate with her Associate degree in May in Pediatric Echocardiography. For more information about the SDMS Foundation, visit www.sdmsfoundation.org. Staff Recognized For Their Service
 
Alvin Community College recognized its employees for their service to the college during the annual service awards ceremony on August 19. Employees were honored for working 45, 40, 35, 30, 25, 20, 15 and 10 years. Sports and Human Performance instructor Don Childs was recognized for his 45 years of service to the college. Wanna Be Blue?

 

Applications are being accepted from students interested in serving as the ACC mascot, Blue. To be eligible students must be enrolled at ACC with at least a 2.0 GPA and be willing to commit to attending community and college events. Students will receive a $600 scholarship to serve as Blue. 2015-16 Drama Season Announced
 
Getting a lawyer to the altar, a comical murder mystery and the adventures of a couple of amphibians fill out a packed lineup for the Drama Department's 2015-16 season. The season will kick off with Getting Sara Married, which will run from October 10-17. The Game's Afoot, (or Holmes for the Holidays) will run from December 5-12. The spring musical will be A Year with Frog & Toad which will be at the theatre from March 5-12. Sleeping Beauty and Repunzel will be the two productions for this year's Summer Children's Theatre Festival on June 20-23 and July 25-28, respectively. Faculty and Staff Prep For Semester in Convocation

Faculty and staff members prepared for the 2015 fall semester and met some new faces during the Convocation on August 19. They were introduced to Vice President of Instruction Dr. Cindy Griffith, Vice President of Student Services, Marilyn Dement, Human Resources Director Karen Edwards and more. They also received a brief presentation on the progress of strategic planning and the Master Facilities Plan.
Success Center Opens to Assist Faculty and Staff with Training

ACC recently established a computer lab especially designed to help instructors utilize technology in the classroom and to share information about teaching methods. Training will be available on many different software platforms including BlackBoard, Starlink, Online Learning Consortium and more. Faculty members will then apply what they learn with their students. The Lab features an online forum that allows instructors to share how useful their training is and whether they implemented what they learned in the class. Read more about the Center.
Site Ranks ACC Fifth in the Nation for Graduate Pay

The website, Payscale, recently ranked ACC among the top five community colleges in the nation for the best salaries among graduates. According to the site, the average ACC graduate at the mid-level of their career earns $68,400, which is the highest amount in Texas. Payscale.com is a private company that collects employee and employer survey information regarding salary scales for a specific region. Read a breakdown on the salaries of ACC graduates.

Registrar Named President State Organization

Irene Robinson, ACC Registrar, has been elected by the membership of the Texas Association of Collegiate Registrar's and Admissions Officers (TACRAO) to be the organization's President-Elect. TACRAO is the state's premier organization that professionally advances the work in the offices of admissions, records, registration and other related functions among institutions of higher learning.

Message from the President of ACC
It has been an exciting start of the fall 2015 semester. Our enrollment is up in dual credit programs as well as on campus. Everyone has worked so hard to welcome our students back to ACC.

We are also welcoming several new faculty, staff and administrators. I'd like to tell you a little about the new administrators:
 
Dr. Cindy Griffith is our new Vice President of Instruction. She brings 30 years of experience working in higher education including service at Blinn College, Lone Star College (Montgomery and Cy-Fair), Alamo Community College District and Angelina College. She has an allied health background and taught and worked in the radiology technology field for many years.
 
Ms. Karen Edwards is our new Executive Director of Human Resources. Karen has more than 20 years of HR experience including working with Pearland ISD, Community Colleges (Brazosport and HCC), UHCL, and at major corporations. Her background in information technology and Master's degree in Human Resources will serve the college well.
 
Ms. Marilyn Dement joined the College as the new Vice President of Student Services. Marilyn comes to us from City Colleges of Chicago's Truman Campus where she was the Dean of Students. She also served many years at Lone Star College North Harris. Marilyn has an extensive background in student services including grant writing and grant management.
 
Mr. Jim Simpson, Dean and Executive Director of Continuing Education and Workforce Development will arrive on September 11. Jim brings experience from the corporate world as well as from Florida State College at Jacksonville, College of Central College, and Lone Star College Tomball. He is an expert in budgeting, analytics and all things with numbers! He is known nationally for the program evaluation model he designed as well as his work on gainful employment.  
 
Dr. Linda J. Austin will be the second Technical Dean, joining Dr. John Bethscheider. Linda has years of experience in business and industry and also years of higher education experience including her leadership roles at Florida State College at Jacksonville and Lone Star College (Tomball and Cy-Fair). Linda led the design, development and opening of three campus centers in Texas and Florida in her previous positions and has extensive grant management experience.
 
I hope you will take time to introduce yourselves to our new campus leaders. In coming editions of the newsletter, we will spotlight our new employees to let you know a little more about them. I encourage you to get to know each of them and learn about the wealth of experience they bring to ACC.

Workforce Development
ACC offers a wide variety of courses and programs through its Continuing Education/ Workforce Development Department. ACC has several programs aimed at helping students start a career including a human resource certificate program, massage internship and Yoga. Other courses offered through Continuing Education include upholstery, geneology, beekeeping, Karate and much more. Classes and programs are offered throughout the fall semester and students can register online.
