Registration for Fall Semester Continues

 

Registration for the 2015-16 fall semester is now open and will end on August 12. Students are encouraged to enroll early to ensure their spot in the classes they need. Classes will begin on August 24. The deadline to make tuition payments or set up an installment plan for the 16-week and first 8-week mini semester is at 5 p.m. on August 12 or at midnight for online payments. Dental Assisting coordinator Leigh Davis spoke with students during the Bring Your Child to Work Day on July 28. Students of ACC staff members visited with several departments to learn more about the college. They toured the campus and visited with instructors in Communications, Diagnostic Cardiovascular Sonography, Dental Assisting, Art, Career Services and more. 

ACC Approves 2015-16 Budget and New Hires During Meeting

 

Regents unanimously approved the 2015-16 budget and approved the hiring of new staff members during their meeting on July 30. The $28.15 million budget includes a 2-percent raise for faculty and staff and minor capital improvements. Regents approved hiring for several positions: Dr. Cynthia Griffith was named the Vice President of Instruction; Marilyn Dement was named Vice President of Student Services; Dr. Linda Austin was named Dean of Technical programs; James Simpson was named Dean and Executive Director of Continuing Education and Workforce Development and Holly Williams was named Director of Retention and Student Success. Alvin Live Presents Pee Wee Bowen Band

   

Classic rock band Pee Wee Bowen will close out the Alvin Live Summer Concert Series on August 13 at the K-219 studio. Doors will open at 7 p.m. Appetizers by Casa Ole and adult beverages will be provided. To purchase tickets over the phone, call 281-756-3600. You can also purchase tickets online. 

Students Teach Area Doctor About Sleep Medicine

 

Polysomnography students became the teachers for several Houston-area physicians on July 9 to show them the technology used in sleep studies. Physicians from the Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas Health Science Center sat down with sleep medicine students to walk through polysomnography procedures. Students went over the equipment, software and procedures for the sleep studies. Read more about the workshop. 

Upward Bound Honors Students During Annual Recognition Dinner

 

The Upward Bound program honored students, past and present, for their academic achievement during the annual Recognition Dinner on July 21. Guest speaker for the event was Chandresh Patel, who recently graduated with a Biochemistry Degree from Texas A&M and is now performing research at Texas Children's Hospital. During the ceremony Ester Jimenez was named Upward Bound Student of the Year and Physical Education instructor Lenny Garcia was named Instructor of the Year. ACC Foundation Receives Grant for Scholarships

 

The ACC Foundation received a $5,000 grant from Texas New Mexico Power's inaugural Power Grant program. The grant will fund $500 scholarships for 10 students with financial needs to complete workforce training and begin job interviews in their chosen industries. The college is now working to identify students who will receive scholarships for the fall semester. Read the full story about the grant. 
Wanna Be Blue?

 

Tryouts will be held on August 12 in the dance room in the Gym for students interested in serving as the ACC mascot, Blue. To be eligible students must be enrolled at ACC with at least a 2.0 GPA and be willing to commit to attending community and college events. Students will receive a $600 scholarship to serve as Blue. Baseball Seeking Fence Sponsors

 

The baseball team is now seeking sponsors from the community by offering billboard space along the Phillips Field fence. Businesses and organizations can post a four-foot by eight-foot sign on the fence for $750 a year. All of the proceeds from the sponsorships will go directly towards student scholarships as well as facility improvements. Dual Credit Hosting Student Orientation Sessions

Students taking Dual Credit Courses next year can attend an orientation session on August 10, 11 and 13. All students who are taking Dual Credit with ACC for the first time must attend a session. Alvin ISD parents and students can attend the August 10 session at Manvel High School. Pearland ISD students can attend the August 11 session at Pearland High School. All Dual Credit students can attend the session at ACC on August 13. The orientation sessions will begin at 6 p.m. Visit the ACC website to learn details about the orientation. ACC Student Pioneers Sickle Cell Treatment

ACC Honors student Bertrand Ebang recently won first place at the Gulf Coast Intercollegiate Symposium competition for his research on Sickle Cell Anemia. His project centered on using ultrasound technology in diagnosing and treating the illness. His project highlights methods of ultrasounds for measuring blood flow and other characteristics. ACC Offers Mexican-American History Course

The History Department is offering courses on Mexican-American History for the first time during the fall semester. Coursework will include readings, discussions, and writing assignments focusing on racialized dynamics, cultural identity, cultural representations and much more from various primary and secondary sources. Mexican-American History I will begin in the fall 2015 semester and is part of a new Associate Degree in History offered at ACC. Mexican-American History I and II can be also be used to satisfy core curriculum requirements. Read more about the courses.

Program Spotlight
ACC Online Degrees
ACC offers four Associate Degree programs and one certificate program that can be earned entirely through online courses. Students can earn a degree in Arts, Management, Psychology or Sociology. There is also a certificate program in Management. Online programs are a great option for people who don't have time to attend face-to face-classes, work irregular hours, or have other time commitments.
