Alvin Live Kicks off on June 11

   

Classic Rock band, LC Roots will open up the Alvin Live Summer Concert Series on June 11 at 7 p.m. in the K-219 Studio at Alvin Community College. LC Roots performs a wide variety of music including classic rock, oldies, country, bluegrass and R&B. Tickets for the LC Roots are $40 or $250 for a table of four. Doors for all concerts will open at 7 p.m. Appetizers and adult beverages will be provided. To purchase tickets over the phone, call 281-756-3600. You can also purchase tickets online.

ACC Regents Move Forward With Strategic Plan

 

Regents approved six goals as part of a strategic plan that will be enacted over the next five years during their meeting on May 28. The board also approved a contract with Stantec, Inc. to create a master facilities plan for the campus, a new organizational chart and new mission and vision statements. The 5-year strategic plan was drafted by consultants after they met with ACC administration, faculty, staff and the community to address the future needs of students at ACC. Educational institutions utilize "breakthrough strategies" to deal with change whether it's population growth, legal adjustments or funding issues. Read more about the meeting along with details about the strategies. The board will have their next meeting on June 25 at 6 p.m. in the Nolan Ryan Center. 
Graduates Walk the Stage in Commencement Ceremonies

 

Graduates received their degrees and certificates during several Commencement ceremonies in May. Associate Degrees and certificates were awarded during ceremonies on May 19 and 20. The Continuing Education and Workforce Development and GED students graduated on May 27. The Law Enforcement Academy graduated its 103rd and 104th classes on May 28. Students in the college's Texas Department of Criminal Justice programs received their degrees during a ceremony on May 26. Check out a story from one of this year's Commencement speakers. 

ACC Kicks Off Movie Night with Pitch Perfect Screening

 

There will be a free Movie Night event on Friday, June 12 in the courtyard. The Student Activities Dept. will be showing Pitch Perfect sing along. The event is free and open to the public. Seating will begin at 7:00 p.m. and the show will start when the sun goes down.  

ACC Registration for Fall 2015 Now Open

 

Registration for the Fall 2015 semester is now open and will close on August 12. Classes will begin on August 24. Fall schedules are now available online. For more information about registration visit the ACC website or call 281-756-3531.

Nurses Receive Pin During Ceremony

 

Nursing students recently had a pinning ceremony at New Hope Church in Manvel on May 13. The Nurse Pinning ceremony includes the graduates receiving their pin, the lighting of the ceremonial lamps and reciting the Nurse's Pledge. Each of the graduates also had an opportunity to thank their families and friends for their support as well as thanking the ACC faculty for their role in earning their degree. 
ACC Recognizes Police Week

 

ACC marked National Police Week during a ceremony on May 11 to recognize officers who have given their lives in the line of duty. ACC cadets lowered the campus flags to half-staff. Alvin Municipal Judge Donna Starkey and President Dr. Christal M. Albrecht also spoke during the event. For more information about Police Week visit www.nationalpoliceweek.com.

Foundation Awards Scholarships at Local High Schools

The Foundation awarded more than $66,000 in scholarships to students at area high schools this year. Thirty-four students at Alvin High School, Manvel High School and Assets Academy received scholarships.

Every year the ACC Foundation hosts events to help raise donations for the Foundation Opportunity scholarships. Twenty Opportunity scholarships were awarded this year for $2,400 each. ACC Student Named New Sleep Technologist of the Year

 

ACC Polysomnography graduate Taylor May received the American Association of Sleep Technologist (AAST) New Technologist Award for 2015. She will be recognized in June at the AAST's national conference in Seattle. May graduated from ACC in 2014 and is now working as a technologist at the Matagorda Regional Medical Center. May was also honored at the Board of Regents meeting on May 28 with an official resolution. Read the full story about May's award.  



Dual Degree Graduates Receive College Diploma before High School Graduation

During the Alvin Community College Commencement ceremony on May 20,  a record number of students from Alvin, Manvel, Pearland, Turner High Schools and a homeschooled student walked the stage at ACC just weeks ahead of getting their high school diplomas. The students began dual credit classes at their respective high schools and earned enough hours to receive an associate degree in General Studies. Art Department to Host Student-Parent Clay Workshops

The Art Department will have  opportunities this summer for kids and adults to learn about creating pottery and sculptures. Pottery workshops for both kids and parents start June 17. Children as young as eight can work alongside their parents to spin pottery in the ACC ceramic studio. There will be workshops on June 17-18 and July 15-16. Each workshop is two hours per day for two days. Costs for the pottery classes are $50 for each person attending. Students, Instructor Place in Juried Art Show

 

Four students and their watercolor painting instructor have works accepted in the Galveston Art League Spring Juried Show in May. The show had over 155 entries, with only 100 admitted. Two painting students, Dianne Owen, and Maureen Lewis won Honorable Mention Awards, and their instructor, Jackie Liddell, won Second Place, and Honorable  Mention  Awards.  Jeannie Ward and Jill Seay had paintings displayed in the show.

Summer Children's Theatre Festival Starts on June 22

 

The 31st Summer Children's Theatre Festival will begin on June 22 with performances of the classic Snow White. The show will run until June 25. All performances of the show begin at 10 a.m. There will be a 7:30 p.m. performance on June 25. Tickets are $3. Purchase tickets online or call 281-756-3606 for details.

CNC/Machinist
The CNC Machinist Immersion Program is designed to simulate a real shop environment for students to learn all aspects of a machine shop.  The program includes instruction on layout and benchwork, manual milling, CNC skills for mills and lathes. Students will get hands-on experience in our state of the art machine shop lab and CNC simulator lab. According to Workforce Solutions, the number of jobs for CNC machinists in the Gulf Coast area will grow by 22 percent by 2018. The median salary for workers in that field is approximately $17 an hour. The program can be completed in as little as 6 months to 1 year.
