ACC Community Choir Performs First Concert

The Community Chorus performed its first concert, Handel's Messiah, to a standing-room only audience at the First United Methodist Church in Alvin on December 9. The group, which is made up of current students and local music enthusiasts, will perform two concerts a year. The singers for the new choir are from all over the region including Alvin, Danbury, Friendswood and Pearland. Read more about the group and about how to join.

ACC Registration for Spring 2015 Open

 

Registration for the spring 16-week and first 8-week mini semester is now open and will close January 13. Spring classes will begin on January 20. The first fall eight-week mini semester will be from January 20 to March 10. Registration for the second mini semester will begin on February 16 and end March 9. Second mini semester classes start March 12. Payment deadline for the spring semester is January 13. For more information about spring registration visit the  ACC website or call 281-756-3531.

ACC Students Present Honors Projects

Approximately 20 students presented their research projects during the annual Honors Presentations on December 4. The presentations are a requirement for students in the Honors program. Students were judged on several criteria including: organization, speaking ability, depth of research, proper citation, attire and use of visual aids.

ACC to Host Annual Big Band Concert on February 7

Jazz and swing dance enthusiasts will get their chance on the dance floor during the Alvin Community College Big Band Concert on February 7. The 16th Annual  Evening of Big Band Music with the Alvin Community band will begin at 7 p.m. The last dance will be 10 p.m. at the Nolan Ryan Center. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15. Flatland Honored As Site Visitor of the Year

Allied Health Division Chair and Respiratory Care Director Diane Flatland was named Site Visitor of the Year by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC). The commission made their announcement during a December conference in Las Vegas. Flatland also serves as a member of CoARC's board of commissioners. The commission is responsible for establishing accreditation for Respiratory Care programs throughout the country. ACC has accreditation through the commission. ACC Helps Feed Area Families In Need

More than 200 area families were treated to a pancake breakfast and donated food items during Breakfast with Santa on December 1. The event has been held for the past 25 years in conjunction with the ACC Can Feed the Hungry/Alvin ISD Shellie Garza Memorial Food Drive. The college hosted two locations for the first time this year-at the ACC campus in Alvin and New Hope Church on 288. Almost 2,000 people, including volunteers, received breakfast. A record amount of 14 tons of non-perishable food was distributed to families. Read the full story of the event.
Students Graduate in Commencement Ceremonies

Students in the Continuing Education/Workforce Development and GED programs received their certificates during a Commencement Ceremony on December 9. Certificates were awarded in Phlebotomy, Dental Assistant, Massage Therapy, Certified Nurse Aide, Veterinary Assistant, Medical Assistant and Welding, The ceremony was also the first for graduates in the new veterans program where former military service members receive free training in welding and pipefitting. The training is funded by a Texas Workforce Commission grant.

ADN Nurse Graduates Receive Pins

Associate Degree Nursing graduates received their pins during a Pinning Ceremony on December 12. The Nurse Pinning ceremony includes the graduates receiving their pin, the lighting of the ceremonial lamps and reciting the Nurse's Pledge. Each of the graduates also had an opportunity to thank their families and friends for their support as well as thanking the ACC faculty for their role in earning their degree. ACC Staff Members Complete Leadership Institute Program

Dual Credit Director Akilah Martin and Music instructor Tim Salter recently completed the Alvin Manvel Area Chamber of Commerce Leadership Institute. Each year, the Chamber sponsors the leadership class to introduce participants to various governmental and private agencies, organizations and programs throughout the county. Hello and Happy New Year!

I hope you all enjoyed the holidays and had the opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends.

It is great to be back for the Spring 2015 semester. Soon students will be filling the classrooms and labs, eager to move on in their educational pursuits. There are also many exciting cultural and athletic events planned and it would be wonderful to see you in attendance. Please plan to join us for one or more ACC events!

Program Spotlight
Diagnostic Cardiovascular Sonography

The ACC Diagnostic Cardiovascualr Sonography program is a two-year Associate Degree. Graduates are trained to use ultrasound technology in order to find defects and medical conditions relating to the cardiovascular system. ACC also has the Pediatric Echocardiography program which is a specialty focused on performing ultrasound scans on children. Students interested in joining the program can apply until February 16.
