Alvin Community College Board of Regents voted to conduct two public hearings on the 2014-15 fiscal year rate during their meeting on July 31.

The proposed tax rate for 2014-15 will be 20.4 cents per $100 of property value which is an increase from the 19.9 cents tax rate this year.

The board will have two public hearings on the tax proposal on August 11 and 14. Both meetings are at 7 p.m. at the Nolan Ryan Center.

ACC Students Become the Teacher

Polysomnography students became the teacher for several Houston-area physicians on July 7.

Physicians from the Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas College of Medicine received instruction from ACC sleep medicine students regarding polysomnography procedures.

The polysomnography students helped teach the doctors about using the equipment, software and procedures for the sleep studies.

Polysomnography graduates help with diagnosis and treatment of conditions like narcolepsy, sleep apnea and insomnia.

ACC is home to the first polysomnography degree program in Texas and one of 16 throughout the United States.

Veterans Share Memories of War
Court Reporting department helps record veteran testimony for project
World War II veteran Elmer Lee shares his experiences about serving in the Pacific while ACC Court Reporting student Amy Quincey takes down his comments on July 19.
They brought their medals, documents and photos. Most importantly, they brought their memories of war.

Fourteen veterans visited ACC on July 19 to work with court reporting students for the Library of Congress Veterans History Project, which documents the experiences of veterans.

World War II veteran Elmer Lee, 88, of Alvin, talked about his time in the U.S. Navy piloting boats. He would often help land the boats loaded with men and equipment during the fight against the Japanese.

Lee was also sent to Japan after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

"Our ship took off as fast as we could go," he said. "They were congregating us for the invasion of Japan."

Each veteran worked with an interviewer and a court reporter who transcribed the veterans' stories verbatim.

Community Band Starts 20th Year
Band kicks off anniversary year with July 4 concert
Alvin Community Band Director David Griffith conducts the band during its 20th Independence Day concert on July 4.
The Alvin Community Band celebrated its 20th anniversary with a bang on July 4 as they braved the stormy weather and performed their annual patriotic concert prior to the fireworks display.

The Independence Day concert marked their 20th year of performing for college and community events.

While there are many community bands in the region, few have been able to maintain their strength through the years like the Alvin Community Band, said director David Griffith.

"They're really wonderful people and we just love to play concert music," he said. "It's a testament to the people who are in it."

There are roughly 50 members of the band who come from all over the Gulf Coast, including Angleton, Alvin, League City and other area communities.

In addition to playing on campus, the band plays for local organizations and area events including Alvin Home for the Holidays.

Students Learn Construction During Camp
Legos/Minecraft theme helps demonstrate engineering principles
Joshua Casares, 8, of Alvin works on his Legos project during the ACC Busy Bodies Kids' College Legos camp on July 22.
Local kids developed vital motor and construction skills using Legos and Minecraft-themed crafts at ACC on July 22.

The camp is one of many this summer as part of the Busy Bodies Kids' College.

Students built 3-D models of construction equipment; used Legos to make mosaics of characters and items in the popular video game Minecraft and created crafts using Perler beads.

"You're learning how to build," said Deanna Reichardt, camp instructor.

The camp is conducted by Brikz 4 Kidz, which teaches children the principles of engineering and architecture using Legos.

Online Student Numbers Growing at ACC
College outpaces national average for students taking classes online
An ACC student works at a computer in one of the computer labs on July 14.
As the online culture among young people continues to grow, so too does the number of college students earning credit online rather than in a classroom.

A recent study by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics reveals that one in four of all college students take some or all classes over the Internet.

ACC had more than 1,500 students enrolled in online courses in the 2014 spring semester, which is 32 percent of the student body. That is higher than both the state and national average for online students, according to the Department of Education study.

The number of students taking classes over the Internet at ACC has more than doubled since 2007.

"Online learning has been a component of ACC's programs for more than 15 years," said Dr. Drew Nelson, dean of Academic Programs. "During that time our online offerings have not only gotten bigger, they've gotten better."

The college offers more than 150 different classes online as well as five Associate Degree programs that can be earned entirely online including General Studies, Psychology, Associate of Arts, Sociology and Management

Continuing Education and Workforce Development also has many online courses in professions such as Activity Director, Medical Coding and Billing, Professional Inspector, Real Estate Inspector and more..

To better prepare students for the differences of online courses, ACC began an online orientation program in 2013 as part of the accreditation reaffirmation process with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

As more students continue to log on rather than sit in the classroom, offerings will only grow, Nelson said.
