ACC Regents Review Proposed Budget
Board will host workshop on July 15

The Board of Regents reviewed the proposed budget for the 2014-15 fiscal year during their meeting on June 26.

 

The proposed $27.38 million budget could possibly include new positions, funding for a master facilities plan and some facilities improvements. Regents voted to approve advertising three instructor positions for Process Technology, Management and Psychology.

 

Regents are set to have a budget workshop on July 15 at 5:30 p.m. at the college.

 

Also during the meeting regents approved hiring new instructors, construction of a training site and more.

Regents will have their next regular meeting on July 24.

Registration for Fall Semester Now Open 
Registration for the fall 2014 semester is now open and will close on August 19. Late registration will be August 21-25.

Fall classes will begin on August 25.

The first fall, eight-week mini-semester will be from August 25 to October 15. Registration for the second mini-semester will begin on September 22 and end October 16. Second mini-semester classes will begin on October 20.

Students entering ACC for the first time must attend a new student orientation session. Orientations will be from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on July 24, August 7, 14 and 20. There will be evening sessions from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on July 29, August 12 and 19. Call 281-756-3686 for information.

Kelly McGuire to Play at Alvin Live
July 10 show is second of the Summer Concert Series
Singer Kelly McGuire will perform the second Alvin Live Summer Concert Series on July 10 at the K-219 studio.

The Summer Concert Series is sponsored by the ACC Foundation. Funds raised from Alvin Live performances are used for ACC Broadcast Communications student training and scholarships.

 

McGuire is a local musician from Clear Lake. His music is heavily influenced by the life and culture of the Texas Gulf Coast.

 

His work as a songwriter earned him several awards. He also won the award for Album of the Year for Boat in Belize during the Texas Country Music Awards in 2008. He was also nominated as the Performer of the Year and Entertainer of the Year in 2008.

 

Ticket prices are $40 and $250 for a reserved table of four.

Students to Perform Thumbelina July 28-31
Production is the second of the Summer Children's Theatre Festival

Local children will perform in the classic Thumbelina during the Summer Children's Theatre Festival from July 28-31.

 

Thumbelina is a play based on the Hans Christian Anderson story about a tiny girl and her various adventures.  

 

Performances will be at 10 a.m. Monday through Thursday. There will be a 7:30 p.m. performance on July 31.

 

The Summer Children's Theatre Festival is sponsored in part by the ACC Foundation.

Solar Panels Going Up on Jogging Trail
An ACC physical plant employee maneuvers a solar lighting panel along the jogging trail on Tuesday.Twelve solar lights will be installed along the ACC jogging trail this week to help improve the safety of runners in the evening and early morning hours. The lights were purchased with $10,000 in funds from a Texas New Mexico Power company grant, a $17,000 donation from faculty member Nancey Lobb and $22,000 in Foundation proceeds.Over the next two weeks, crews will install the poles on the track with the solar panels pointing south. The light fixtures and wiring will be installed once the poles are in place.
Veterans Get Help At Fair
Veterans find information on education benefits, home loans and more 
USDA Rural Development specialist Deborah Wright speaks with veteran Adam Jasso, of Pearland, about low-interest home loans during the Veterans Education and Benefits Fair on June 24.
ACC hosted local veterans during the Veterans Education and Benefits Fair on June 24 to help show them the available resources to obtain their degree, find a job and purchase a home.

 

Government agencies and local organizations were at the Fair to provide vets with assistance including the Wounded Warrior Project, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Military Veteran Peer Network and many more.

 

Several ACC faculty and staff members also provided information about their programs to vets seeking a career including Paralegal, Court Reporting and Process Technology among others.

Studies are showing that a majority of veterans in the United States are faring well in college by completing their education. More than 50 percent of veterans who have signed up to use their educational benefits have graduated with a degree or workforce certification, a completion rate which is comparable to other students, according to the Student Veterans of America organization.

ACC Upward Bound Wins TRiO Competiton
Win is 10th straight for Upward Bound students
ACC Upward Bound students pose for a photo after winning the Gulf Coast Upward Bound Competition for the 10th straight year.
Alvin Community College Upward Bound took first place at the annual TRiO Field Day on June 20 on the Texas Southern University campus.

 

This is 10th consecutive win for the ACC Upward Bound team.

 

"This year our students worked hard to uphold an ACC Upward Bound tradition of winning," Director Regan Metoyer said. "I am beyond proud of them.  These students work hard year round and it has paid off."

 

The competition included Upward Bound programs from Texas Southern University, Galveston College, University of Houston-Downtown and College of the Mainland.  

 

The schools competed in several activities including math, science, athletics and dance.

 

Upward Bound seeks to motivate low-income and/or potential first-generation college students and help them develop the skills they need to complete secondary education and succeed at the postsecondary educational institution of their choice. The purpose of the program is to build confidence and self-esteem, while providing the necessary tools and guidance to foster academic success.

ACC Starts Access Granted Program
Workers can receive free pipefitting and welding training

ACC is now working with local industry and Workforce Solutions to create the Access Granted program, which provides free job training for those interested in the pipefitting and welding fields.

 

Workers interested in joining the oil and gas industry can apply for a spot in the program by contacting the Workforce Solutions offices.

 

There is an ever-increasing need for new welders as the industry is seeing a rapid pace of retirements. The average age of a welder now is 55 years. U.S. Labor Department projections show the number of welding jobs will increase by 15 percent over the next 10 years.

 

The Pipefitting program will take five weeks to complete while the Welding program will take 14 weeks.

 

There are 82 slots open in Pipefitting and eight available for Welding.

Classes will begin on July 7.

ACC Softball Team Hosting Tryouts
All players welcome for chance to earn spot on squad
ACC catcher Caitlyn Gunn faces a pitch against Grayson College.

The women's softball team will be looking for a few good Dolphins during an open tryout at 10 a.m.  July 12 at Ruth Ryan Field.

 

Players must meet college eligibility requirements in order to try out.

Coaches will be looking at players' hitting, throwing and fielding abilities to determine if players are qualified.

 

The tryout is free and those wanting to make the team should bring their own gear. They will also need a copy of their most recent physical.

Dental Assisting Program Opening its Doors
Students interested in program can learn more on July 16
ACC Dental Assistant students practice their skills in class. 

The Dental Assistant program will host an Open House and student orientation on July 16 at 6 p.m.

 

Students interested in becoming a dental assistant can learn more about obtaining their certification, admissions requirements as well as starting the registration process. 

 

The orientation will be for students entering the program in the fall semester.


Dental assistants are seeing a strong growth in the job market, which is projected to increase by 31 percent over the next 10 years, according to the U.S. Labor Department.

Community Welcomes Dr. Albrecht
Residents, college staff visit with new president during reception
President Dr. Christal M. Albrecht speaks to a crowd of well-wishers during a welcome reception on June 19.
New ACC President Dr. Christal M. Albrecht and her husband Terry Sawma were welcomed by local officials, college employees and the community during a reception at the Nolan Ryan Center on June 19.

Dr. Albrecht began serving as the ACC president on May 19.

"I am overwhelmed by this turnout, I feel so honored you all took the time to be here," she said. "I have been waiting to come here a very long time. I am so excited to be the new leader at Alvin Community College."

Since joining ACC, Dr. Albrecht has attended many of the Commencement ceremonies while also taking time to meet with staff members at the college to learn about their departments.

"I have these fantastic board members, I have these fantastic faculty and staff," she said during the reception. "I'm getting to know not only the campus but getting to know the community as well."

Dr. Albrecht said she has been working with the faculty and staff in order to develop possible ideas for improvements at the college.

"I want to know what are we doing really well and what are some areas where we can do better," she said.

While she has hit the ground running, Dr. Albrecht said she is glad to be in Alvin and serving as the new president.

"I'm just pleased as can be to be here," she said.

Dr. Albrecht came to ACC after working at Florida State College in Jacksonville. Prior to that she served at Pima Community College in Arizona.
ACC Will Celebrate July 4th with Music, Fireworks
ACC and Community Band concert followed by fireworks display
The ACC and Community Band will perform patriotic tunes for the Fourth of July.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the ACC front entrance, outside Buildings A and B.

The fireworks display, sponsored by the City of Alvin, will follow after the sun sets. KACC 89.7 FM will play music live during the display.

The event is free and the public is invited to attend.
