ACC Hosts Spring Commencement Ceremonies

ACC students received their degree or workforce certification during the Spring graduation ceremonies in May.

Associate degrees were awarded in two spring commencement events on May 13 and 14.
 
ACC conferred diplomas to Texas Department of Criminal Justice inmates at a Commencement at the Stringfellow Unit on May 19.

The Continuing Education Workforce Development Programs recognized its graduates on May 28.

Law enforcement cadets received their degrees during a ceremony on May 29.

The Associates Degree of Nursing graduates received their pins in a ceremony on May 9.

ACC Regents Take Oath of Office
Droege joins board after winning May election
ACC Board of Regents chair Pete Nash swears in regents Cheryl Knape, Mike Pyburn and Jody Droege during the meeting on May 20.
The Board of Regents swore in three members during their meeting on May 20.

After the regents certified the vote from the May 10 election, Cheryl Knape and Mike Pyburn, who were unopposed during the election joined the newest member, Jody Droege in taking the oath of office.

 

Droege replaces former regent Brenda Brown, who decided not to seek reelection after 24 years on the board.

 

The meeting was also the first for new ACC President Dr. Christal M. Albrecht who began her presidency on May 19.

 

Regents also received a report from the Communications Department, approved personnel changes and approved the purchase of computer software licenses.

 

The board will meet again on June 26 at 7 p.m. in the Nolan Ryan Center.

ACC Offers Help for Veterans at Fair
Veterans can get assistance applying for school or finding work
College advisers will join several local veterans' organizations to provide needed help for veterans looking to start their college education or seeking a job during the Veterans' Education and Benefits Fair on June 24.

Volunteers will help all veterans apply for their benefits to pay for college, disability benefits, housing assistance and more.

"We are hoping to have some young veterans there to start their education benefits," said Toby Herzog, ACC veterans academic advisor.

College advisors will be joined with representatives from the Texas Veterans Commission, Wounded Warriors, Salvation Army, Brazoria County Veterans Affairs Office, United Way, the Alvin chapter of the American Legion plus many more.

Veterans and their family members are invited to attend the event to learn more about the options available to them now that they've finished their service.

"They need the benefits to begin their next career," Herzog said.

Former baseball legend releases book with barbecue recipes

Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan was one of three speakers featured at the annual ACC Foundation Author's Luncheon on May 28.

 

Joining Ryan on the speakers' panel were Nolan Ryan Beef CEO Charlie Bradbury and the Texas Rangers' executive chef Christobal Vasquez.

Ryan and Vasquez worked together to write The Nolan Ryan Beef & Barbecue Cookbook: Recipes from a Texas Kitchen, which was released in May.

Ryan and Bradbury spoke to the audience about how they started the Nolan Ryan Beef Company. Ryan also shared some of the secrets about how he and Vasquez worked together to craft some of the recipes featured in the book.

The Author's Luncheon is hosted every year by the Foundation to raise funds for ACC student scholarships, staff development and community enrichment programs. Past speakers include Barbara Bush, Dan Pastorini and Susan Baker.

Alvin Live Kicks Off with Cory Morrow on June 12
Concerts benefit student scholarships
Country singer Cory Morrow will lead off the Alvin Live Summer Concert Series on June 12. 

The Alvin Live Summer Concert Series will feature another stellar lineup for 2014 starting with Texas country music singer Cory Morrow on June 12.

 

The Summer Concert Series is sponsored by the ACC Foundation. Funds raised from Alvin Live performances go to ACC Broadcast Communications student training, equipment and scholarships.

 

Morrow is a Houston native and has a wide following throughout the Southwest thanks to his extensive touring and lively, dynamic performances.

 

His hits include Beat of Your Heart, Ramblin' Man, Lead Me On and Texas On My Mind a duet he performed with Pat Green. Morrow has independently sold more than 200,000 albums.

 

The K-219 provides an intimate venue for 65 guests giving fans a chance for an up close experience. 

 

The concert series also includes tropical coastal-style singer Kelly McGuire on July 10 and the jazz band Kelly Dean Group on August 14.

Registrationfor Fall Semester Opens June 23 
Registration for the fall 2014 semester will open on June 23 and will close on August 19. Late registration will be August 21-25.

Fall classes will begin on August 25.

The first fall, eight-week mini-semester will be from August 25 to October 15. Registration for the second mini-semester will begin on September 22 and end October 16. Second mini-semester classes will begin on October 20.

Campers a Get Chance to Rock
Music instructors to host the third annual Rock Camp, June 9-12

There are many budding musicians who learn how to play an instrument in the garage or in their room, not a band hall in a school.

 

Music instructors are looking to reach out to those kids and give them a chance to build on their skills during the third annual Rock Camp June 9-12.

 

The camp gives students an opportunity to learn about classic rock, including instrumental techniques, rehearsal methods and recording sessions. Campers will need to bring their own instruments.

 

Rock Camp is open to all guitar players, bass players and drummers who will be entering 7th grade through 12th grade in the fall.

 

All camp instructors are professional musicians and will give the young rockers some valuable lessons on making great rock music.

 

Campers will get a chance to perform in a studio and learn how to make a recording. There will also be a concert at the close of the camp on June 12.

 

The camp will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and is open to all skill levels.

ACC Baseball Team Ousted in Region 14 Tournament
Team loses to Blinn College in championship game
ACC third baseman Rick Nomura throws out a runner against Vernon College
The ACC Baseball team came within one win to advance to the JUCO World Series ultimately losing to Blinn College in the Region 14 championship game on May 17 in Lufkin.

The team had battled through the tournament winning several do-or-die games to play against Blinn in the final.

Rick Nomura and Lewis Guilbeau were named to the All-Region 14 team.

The Dolphins were ranked as high as 4th in the nation during the regular season.

Players Nick Hernandez, Bryson Mitchell, Juan Cortina, Brian Belote, Brian Valencia, Jack Kaiser, Rick Nomura, Romeo Cortina and Lewis Guilbeau were named to the Region 14 South Zone team.

 

Head Coach Bryan Alexander was named the Coach of the Year for the Region 14 South Zone.

The Baseball team last went to the JUCO World Series in 2008.

sophomores, many of whom are expecting to play at the university level.

Players have signed letters-of-intent to play at Ole Miss, Arkansas, McNeese, Texas State and Sam Houston State.

The softball team ended their season in May with a 16-34 record. It was the first season under new coach Rudi Cantu.

Academically, nine of the 16 sophomores on the baseball team either completed their Associate degree or were within two courses of finishing. There were six softball players who also received their degrees.

Art Department Serving Up Summer Workshops
Pottery classes for parents and students

The Art Department will have many opportunities this summer for kids and adults to learn about creating pottery and sculptures.

There will be several pottery workshops for both kids and parents starts June 11. Children as young as 8 can work alongside their parents to spin pottery in the ACC ceramic studio.

 

Each workshop two hours a day for two days. Workshops will be on June 11-12 and 25-26 and in July on 9-10 and 23-24.

 

Costs for the pottery classes are $50 for each person attending. All workshops are from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Summer Children's Theatre Festival Begins June 23
Festival starts with performance of Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp

The Drama Department and area students will perform Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp from June 23-26.

 

The play is the classic Middle Eastern story of a wayward teen who finds a magical lamp with a mysterious genie living inside.

 

Performances will be at 10 a.m. on Monday through Thursday. There will be a 7:30 p.m. performance on June 26.

 

The Festival will continue with Thumbelina on July 28-31.

 

The Summer Children's Theatre Festival is sponsored in part by the ACC Foundation.

ACC Busy Body Kids College
Students can learn about engineering, forensic science and more

Although kids will be out of class during the summer months, they still have opportunities to learn at the Busy Bodies Kids' College.

 

This summer's camps will include topics such as engineering, creative writing and illustration, CSI forensics and Lego construction.

 

Registration for the camps is now open and they are available to kids between the ages of 5-13 years. The first of the four-day camps begin on June 16 and they will continue throughout the summer.
