Foundation board members made the surprise announcement during the 14th annual Christmas Gala on December 3. The endowed scholarship was set at $38,000 to commemorate Allbright's 38 years as president. He will be exiting the college in August.

"The College Foundation Board of Directors really surprised me at the Christmas Gala with the endowed scholarship for future ACC students," Allbright said. "This was special and very meaningful as it will benefit students long after I am gone."

Thanks to generous supporters  the Alvin Community College Foundation raised $38,000 during the 14th annual Christmas Gala on December 3 at the Nolan Ryan Center.

Half of the money raised at the event goes directly towards student scholarships.

The remaining funds are used for the three Excellence Awards given every year to a professional employee, a faculty member and a technical support, clerical or maintenance employee.

The Foundation also uses the funds to support the Summer Children's Theater, Innovative Initiative grants and other programs on campus. The Christmas Gala is the ACC Foundation's largest fundraiser of the year.

Proceeds from the rentals went to the Noah's Ark Bayou Sanctuary shelter in Danbury. The sanctuary provided the puppies for the event.

ACC Softball and Baseball Prep for 2014
Teams start Spring season on January 31
ACC head coach Bryan Alexander, right, congratulates player Travis Valdez after he homered in a game against San Jacinto in 2013.

After coming close to making a trip to the NJCAA World Series, the ACC Baseball team is looking to take that extra step in the 2014 season.

With seven returning starters the Dolphins baseball team plans to go a little further in the post season in 2014. The Dolphins were one game away from the NJCAA World Series last season, losing to Navarro College in the Division 14 tournament Championship game.

The Dolphins had a strong season finishing  with a 38-22 record.

The team did a lot of things right during the 2013 campaign and had a well balanced attack, Head Coach Bryan Alexander said.

While the team's pitching had a good season last year, they will be even better in 2014 with five pitchers returning.

"Having an older team is helpful," Alexander said. "They have a good idea of what to expect."

The Baseball team will have its home opener against Vernon College on January 31.

ACC softball pitcher Julia Montoya, of Hays, delivers a pitch against Grayson College during the home opener in 2013.

The ACC softball team will have a new coach who plans to build on experience gained from a disappointing season.

The Lady Dolphins will be taking the field this year with a new head coach. Alvin native Rudi Cantu took over the head coach position after serving as an assistant coach for two years.

"I feel very good being in Alvin," Cantu said. "I'm glad to have the opportunity to be here. I'm excited."

The Lady Dolphins ended their season last year with a 16-32 record. With 12 sophomores returning this season, Cantu said the team will be more dominating this year in NJCAA Division 14 play.

The softball team will start their season on January 31 in the Galveston College Tournament.

Families in Need Get Chance to Visit with Santa
Breakfast with Santa has record turnout
Santa and Mrs. Claus visit with 4-month-old Karson Sanders, of Alvin, during the Breakfast with Santa event on December 7.
More than 200 area families in need were treated to a pancake breakfast and donated food items during Breakfast with Santa on December 7 at ACC.

The event has been held for the past 25 years in conjunction with the ACC Can Feed the Hungry/Alvin ISD Shellie Garza Memorial Food Drive.

This year saw a record number of families receiving food. Donations also increased by 60 percent compared to last year.

"We had more food donated than ever before," said Coach Gary Coffman, ACC instructor who heads the food drive efforts. "We have more volunteers than we ever have. I'm so grateful."

All 22 AISD campuses participated. There were dozens of volunteers from ACC staff, local churches including New Hope Church and Alvin Church of Christ, the ACC Baseball and Softball teams, ACC Grounds crew along with Alvin ISD students, teachers, Alvin ISD cafeteria staff and Superintendent Fred Brent. The ACC Culinary Arts students cooked the breakfast.

Several tons of nonperishable food were donated to the food drive from the Alvin ISD schools and ACC. The remaining food after the breakfast was donated to the Alvin Food Pantry and the Manvel Food Pantry.

Lawrence Brown wanted to give his four adopted sons a chance and sit with Santa and talk about what they wanted for Christmas. Instead of going to a mall, Brown brought them to the Breakfast with Santa.

Before meeting the Santa and Mrs. Claus, Brown and his sons were treated to a pancake breakfast.

"We just wanted to do something special for the boys this Christmas with Santa," Brown said. "This is something that makes it really special."

Many of the families at the event said they were grateful for the program and the many volunteers who made Breakfast with Santa possible.

"This is really good for the community," said Robert Nava, of Alvin.
