Houston Business Hires ACC Welders

Staffing Firm turns to ACC program for workers

ACC Welders
Houston-based Turban Air Systems recently hired four Alvin Community College welders. Students from left are Gildardo Vazquez, Nathan Roberts, Enrique Reyna, and Andrew Howell.

Four ACC welders are set to go to work for Houston-based Turban Air Systems after a staffing firm approached ACC welding director Laura Bell this fall in search of skilled welders.

The firm Aerotek hired four students in the current Shielded Metal Arc Welding class for Turbine Air Systems after the students completed half the ACC welding program. After completion of the ACC program, they will enter Aerotek's on-the-job training for Turbine Air Systems at a rate of $14.00 to $15.00 an hour; a rate that will only go up after completion of the training.

"Welding jobs are in high demand not only nationwide but here in the Houston area," says Kirby Venzin, on-site manager for Aerotek. "Welders are needed so badly that we have created different training programs to fit certain client's needs. We can take welders with little to no work experience and have them train in our program and they leave with a certification that meets the needs of our clients so they can begin work immediately."

New welding classes begin on Jan. 17 for shielded metal arc welding. Introduction classes begin on Jan. 23.
