Board of Regents Continues Work on Budget
Search for New Softball Coach Begins |
The search for a replacement for long-time ladies softball coach, Jennifer Hightower, officially began after Alvin Community College Regents voted, at the July 28 board meeting, to fill the position as soon as possible.
Hightower was one of 12 ACC faculty and staff members who took the employee exit incentive program that was approved at the June board meeting. The plan, which was implemented to reduce expenses in the wake of state budget cuts, allowed for employees to receive a percentage of their salary, distributed over two to five years, if they left the college.
"Even though the softball coach position has not been officially posted, I've received calls and resumes from several highly-qualified candidates," said ACC athletic director, Bill Lewis. "Now that the board has given us the go-ahead to fill the position, our goal is to find a new coach who will continue to grow the softball program and be a great addition to the instructional staff of the college."
During the meeting, regents also ratified the process for reviewing the ACC mission statement and goals, which is mandated by the Southern Association of Colleges, the governing board for community colleges in our area. In addition, regents voted to continue using First National Bank of Alvin as the ACC check depository bank.
The next scheduled board of regents meeting will take place on Thursday, Aug. 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Nolan Ryan Center on the ACC campus.

Welding Program to hold Open House on August 31
Student Projects to be Sold for Scholarship Fund |
The Alvin Community College Continuing Education and Workforce Development Welding Program will host an open house on August 31 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the ACC welding shop in building D.
Industry leaders including Miller Manufacturing and Thermodynamics Manufacturing will provide welding demonstrations and Ocean Corporation, an underwater welding company will share information about this specialized area of the trade.
"Welding has enjoyed continued job growth over the past few years and employment opportunities are still out there for well-trained welders," said Laura Bell, the Welding Program coordinator. "People who are interested in starting a career in welding are welcome to stop by the open house to learn more about the profession."
To help raise money for the Welding Program scholarship fund, iron work decorations and refreshments will be sold during the open house. In addition, Tri-County, a welding supply company, will be donating a portion of the sales of supplies that evening.
ACC welding courses combine classroom studies with extensive hands-on training in the welding lab. Welding program graduates have found jobs in a number of industries including petro-chemical refineries, construction companies, fabrication shops and ship yards.
The next welding job training course in Shielded Metal Arc Welding begins August 30 and will meet Monday - Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for 14 weeks.
The welding program will also offer Stick Welding and TIG Welding in the evenings this fall. Both of these 72-hour classes meet Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. starting September 14.
