ACC Fall Registration Begins July 18
Register to Secure Classes
|
Registration for the fall 2011 semester at Alvin Community College will begin July 18 and will run through Aug. 18.
Students can register online using WebACCess or on-campus in the Enrollment Services Center, A-100.
Early registration benefits students and the college in numerous ways. For students, it helps lock-in their desired classes; eliminates the last-minute rush and long lines during on-campus registration; allows more time to schedule work, family and extracurricular activities around classes, allows more time to handle unforeseen situations and helps make the registration process much easier.
For ACC, registering for classes as early as possible helps the staff and faculty prepare for semester needs early; reduces the possibility of a class being canceled for not meeting minimum requirements and provides better service to students by reducing long lines during the registration process.
The fall 2011 schedule is available online and print copies are available around campus. Classes begin Aug. 24. For more information, contact the ACC Enrollment Services Center at (281) 756-3531.

Board of Regents Review Proposed Budget
Decrease in State Funding Presents Shortfall |
Alvin Community College introduced the college's 2011 - 2012 operating budget to the ACC Board of Regents at the monthly meeting on Thursday, June 23.
While the Texas Legislature is still finalizing the state's biennial budget, which includes funding for higher education, ACC has been warned that funding cuts will be dramatic. "Our enrollment has steadily been climbing over the past few years and these cuts from the legislature will definitely have an impact on the way we do business," said Dr. Darryl Stevens, Dean of Financial Services and Administration. "Over the next two years we are expecting to do more with less."
ACC is projecting a 12.91 percent decrease in state funding over the next two years. In addition, employee insurance and retirement benefits are expected to increase by almost $2 million.
In anticipation of the impending cuts, the ACC budget planning team, made up of key members of the college's administration, has been meeting regularly to review the operating budget and revenue stream for the college. Throughout the past fiscal year, the team has reduced operating costs by $1.15 million, but college officials at a $456,000 shortfall in revenue.
The ACC budget planning team continues to look for further cost reductions and an operating budget will not be approved until after the legislature adjourns and other income variables including maintenance tax revenues and salary savings generated by the employee exit program have been finalized.
During the meeting, regents also approved Board Meeting dates for 2011-12 and the financial report ending May 2011. |
Lab School Team Makes Impact at Relay for Life
Team Raised over $8,000 |

The Alvin Community College Child Development Lab School recently took a virtual trip to Asia to help raise funds for The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.
Led by the Lab School cook and nutrition teacher, Lynn Johnson, the team raised over $8,000 to help fight cancer.
"Last year we raised $2,500 and this year we wanted to blow that out of the water," said Johnson. "We have been fundraising since January and have had awesome support from our staff, friends and the parents of our students"
In addition to fundraising by individual team members, the Lab School raised money with several small events including a mini Relay for Life around the ACC campus. During this pint-sized parade, Lab School students collected spare change from ACC students and employees while proudly displaying homemade banners and signs supporting Relay for Life.
This year's Relay theme was "The Amazing Race," and each team was asked to represent a different country. The ACC Lab School was assigned "China" and geared many of its fundraisers and decorations around it. "We're teachers, we can bring it," said Johnson.
The team put their creativity to work throughout the event, which earned them several awards. By converting their event campsite into a Chinese garden complete with a Chinese fortune tree, fish pond and Chinese food like eggrolls and fortune cookies, the team earned the Best Campsite Award. It also took home the Best Decorated Bra Award for its bra adorned with panda bears.
In addition to their creative prizes, the ACC Lab School team also took home the Most Funds Raised Online Award.
This is the fourth year the Lab School has participated in this event. Johnson became involved in Relay for Life when she was the president of the ACC chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. "Relay for Life was the focus of the Phi Theta Kappa national chapter the year I was president at ACC," said Johnson.
Overall, the ACC Lab School team was the fifth highest fundraiser at the event, which took-in over $140,000 for The American Cancer Society.
Johnson and the rest of her teammates are already looking ahead to the 2012 Relay for Life. "Our goal next year is $10,000 and we can't wait to start fundraising," said Johnson. |
