ACC Named in Top 10% of U. S. Community Colleges
College Eligible to Compete for $1 Million Aspen Prize |
ACC was recently ranked by The Aspen Institute as one of the top 120 community colleges in the U. S. for "student success in completion, consistent improvement in outcomes over time and equity in outcomes for students of all racial/ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds." The results from that study were announced by Dr. Jill Biden, a community college professor and wife of Vice President Joe Biden, and U. S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan during a kick-off event in Washington, D. C. on April 25. According to The Aspen Institute, the purpose of the study was to identify community colleges with highly successful initiatives so those principles could transfer to lower performing schools to help improve graduation and transfer rates and student success. The 120 community colleges chosen by the study are now eligible to compete for the inaugural $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. The Aspen Institute is a non-profit organization with the goals to "foster values-based leadership, encouraging individuals to reflect on the ideals and ideas that define a good society, and to provide a neutral and balanced venue for discussing and acting on critical issues."

Regents Approve Two Online Degree Programs
Exit Incentive Program Discussed to Help College Save Money |
ACC regents approved two online degree programs during a regular meeting on April 28. The two existing associate of arts degrees in General Studies and General Liberal Arts are now available with all online classes. Approximately 1,500 students take advantage of ACC online classes, many of them in addition to their on-campus classwork. ACC has been offering an online associate degree in management development for several years.
In other matters, board members discussed the possibility of offering an exit incentive program this year to help counter the state's expected reduction in funding and lowering income from property taxes in the college district. The exit incentive program is designed to provide long-time employees the opportunity to resign and receive a certain percentage of their annual salary over an approved amount of time. The goal of such a program is to voluntarily decrease the number of employees, reassign duties and hire essential replacement personnel at a lower pay grade. Board members asked administrators to develop more examples to determine if a program would be acceptable. ACC President Dr. Rodney Allbright suggested that the board not make a decision until May or June when more information was known about the budget and more research was conducted on the exit incentive program.

College Hosts Regular Online Auctions
Items Available for Sale at Public Surplus Site | ACC is among many educational institutions that now sell its outdated and unused equipment and furniture online. The ACC Board of Regents approved the use of online selling in early 2004 as another option for liquidating goods. The college still can sell items through various other means, such as public auctions, closed or sealed bids, as necessary. The online auctions are conducted through Public Surplus (www.publicsurplus.com), an Internet service that works much like the popular eBay, but is designed specifically for municipalities, governmental agencies and educational institutions. Registration is free for bidders with Public Surplus, but it is necessary to read the terms and conditions very carefully before bidding and purchasing items online. People need to pick up the items they purchase at the college. New items are posted regularly. Online listings for equipment are categorized with a detailed description and photograph and are open for bidding usually for 7 days. For more information about ACC online auctions, call (281) 756-3809. |
