ACC PSG Recognizes National Sleep Awareness Week
New Club Forms to Promote Community Involvement
sleep clubIn recognition of National Sleep Awareness Week, March 7-13, the faculty and students of the ACC Polysomnography Program would like to bring attention to the harm that poor sleep can cause and solutions that can improve quality of life. The U. S. Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health identifies more than 70 types of sleep disorders that chronically affect millions of Americans of every age, race and gender. The direct and indirect negative consequences of sleep disorders can include: diseases, accidents and/or emotional and psychiatric issues. At ACC, students train to become registered polysomnographic technologist (RPSGT) in order to diagnose sleep disorders and assist physicians in implementing measures to help correct or reduce the impact. ACC polysomnography students created a new club on Feb. 21 to promote good sleep habits with service projects for the community. During their first meeting, they heard from Dawson High School student Anita Rao (right photo, second from left), who is becoming a national celebrity for her efforts to inform teens about the importance of developing healthy sleeping habits. Despite so many people in need of healthcare services related to sleep disorders, there are only approximately 13,000 RPSGTs internationally. The ACC associate degree program consists of 63 credit hours and provides needed skills and experience for people who want to work in the profession and take the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) examination for certification. The program is also available to people already working in the field who desire a degree. Several of the beginning core courses are offered online to provide more flexibility for students. For more information about the Polysomnography Program at ACC, call (281) 756-5655 or e-mail sleepstudy@alvincollege.edu.
